A super Sunday
Sure, there was a big game in another sport on Sunday. But there were plenty of big games before that in Division III basketball this afternoon.

Elizabethtown notched an important win in conference over Albright 74-67. The Blue Jays used a 14 to two run midway through the second half to take the lead and then made their free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Keith Fogel scored 18 points and was 7-for-7 from the free throw line in the victory. Albright's loss coupled with Lycoming's narrow 69-68 win over Arcadia forges a tie between those two atop the MAC Commonwealth standings.

No. 21 Wooster is unbeaten, but not untested, in the NCAC after today's win at Wabash 64-61. Ian Franks' driving layup with 30 seconds left gave the Scots a two-point lead. The Little Giants missed a couple potential game tying shots and the Scots emerged with the victory. Mount Aloysius upended No. 22 Medaille 65-64 when the Mavericks only scored one point in the final 90 seconds of a close game. Sunday's men's scores.

In women's action, Widener ended No. 21 Lebanon Valley's undefeated run in the MAC Commonwealth Conference. The Pride upset the Flying Dutchmen by outscoring them 42-26 in the second half. Chicago held off No. 24 Rochester 73-64 and kept pace with No. 3 Washington U. in the UAA chase. The Bears handled Emory 61-47. Sunday's women's scores.

Too hot to be cold
With snow blanketing much of the country, many of Saturday's games have been rescheduled for tomorrow or Monday. But the weather couldn't cool off a couple of teams who remain hot in the final weeks of the regular season.

It was another day and another big win for No. 1 Amherst who defeated No. 10 Tufts in a thriller, 65-56. Sophomores Jackie Renner and Caroline Stedman each scored 13 of their team-high 16 points in the second half to lift the Jeffs from a six-point halftime deficit. Amherst can wrap up home court for the conference tournament with a win against archrival Williams next weekend. Opening the second half with a 22-3 run, No. 5 George Fox held Whitworth scoreless for more than 10 minutes and stretched its winning streak to 15 with a 70-43 win. Saturday's women's scores.

In men's action, John Carroll regained control of the OAC by beating Wilmington 82-77. The Blue Streaks, who were selected No. 2 in the preseason national poll and then slipped off the radar entirely, have now won six straight. Patrick Hanley pumped in 30 points, including 21 in the second half, to lift Lake Forest to a 66-59 upset win at No. 9 St. Norbert. Saturday's men's scores.

No. 6 UW-Whitewater lost for the second time in three games and the third time in six, falling 69-68 at UW-River Falls in overtime. No. 17 Texas-Dallas turned a six-point deficit into a three point win in the closing minutes at No. 24 Mississippi College, 84-81. The Comets shot 13-for-33 from behind the arc but the biggest three-point play came the old fashioned way. Scott Rodgers scored and got fouled with five seconds left to break the 81-81 tie. Augustana ended No. 23 Carthage's seven-game winning streak with a 70-59 road win behind 24 points from Kyle Nelson. No. 25 Colby finished a lost weekend with a loss at No. 8 Middlebury 72-57.

Earlier on Saturday, Steve Thomas ran the tip drill to perfection, sinking a putback at the buzzer as Plattsburgh State defeats Buffalo State 88-86 on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010. More Division III buzzer beaters.

North Carolina Wesleyan completed a big week with a win over Christopher Newport 90-80. The Battling Bishops, who are the only team in their conference with a winning record (11-9), beat second place Shenandoah and third place Christopher Newport this week. Hamline moved closer to clinching an MIAC tournament slot as Carl Hipp scored 29 and Ray Brown added 20 in a 66-63 win against Gustavus Adolphus. DeSales downed Delaware Valley 77-61 to clinch a MAC Freedom playoff spot despite Darnell Braswell limited to 20 minutes because of fouls.

This afternoon the Christopher Newport women remained unbeaten by downing North Carolina Wesleyan 85-58. Most of the Presidents' Athletic Conference schedule was postponed, but not the showdown for first place. And the top spot remained in Thomas More's hands, as the No. 17 Saints recorded a resounding 64-38 win against No. 20 Washington and Jefferson. Hamline beat regionally ranked Gustavus Adolphus 69-65 behind 19 points and eight rebounds from Mary Wilkowski. Buena Vista overcame a 17-point second-half deficit and beat Loras 89-85. UW-Platteville beat UW-Eau Claire 57-51, winning for the first time in UWEC's Zorn Arena since 1988.
