2004 Division III men's basketball tournament

Nick Bennett tallied a game-high 30 points to lead Wisconsin-Stevens Point to an 84-82 win over defending champions Williams College to earn the 2004 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball title at the Salem Civic Center. Bennett hit 12-of-19 shots from the floor including 3-for-5 from three-point range. The junior forward also pulled down five rebounds and blocked three shots en rote to Most Outstanding Player honors. Jason Kalsow, also named to the All-Tournament Team, was the only other Pointer in double figures as he poured in 24 points and pulled down nine caroms, while dishing out six assists. Williams was led by Tucker Kain who had 23 points and eight rebounds. Chuck Abba tallied 21 points and five rebounds while Michael Crotty and Ben Coffin chipped in with 15 and 10 points respectively. Crotty and Kain's efforts placed them on the All-Tournament Team for the weekend. Wisconsin-Stevens Point (29-5 overall) jumped out to a 12-6 lead early in the game, including four points by Kalsow. The Ephs then went on a run of their own, scoring 14 of the next 20 points to go up 20-18 with 11:01 left in the half. The Pointers entered the locker room up 38-33 at the half after shooting 47.1% from the floor in the opening frame. In the second half, the Pointers stretched the lead to 11 points with 16:27 left in the game on a lay-up by Kalsow. Crotty put the Ephs on top, 61-59, with a three pointer at the 11:17 mark, but a 15-foot jumper by Bennett with 10:43 remaining tied the game at 65. The teams traded baskets throughout the rest of the game, but a jumper by Kalsow with 0.2 seconds left gave the Pointers the victory.

*D3hoops.com ranked teams in each bracket 1-12 because the NCAA did not release seedings for this year's tournament. Our seedings are unofficial and are meant to give you some idea of the relative strength of each team relative to its bracket. Matchups are not always traditional because of geographical considerations and the possibility of a difference of opinion with the NCAA committee.
