U. 65, St. Thomas 58 The Bears (25-2), trying to win the school's fourth consecutive national championship, won their 17th consecutive NCAA playoff game over four seasons. They advanced to Saturday's 7 p.m. sectional championship game vs. the winner of Friday's second game between Wartburg and Fontbonne. The Tommies, who shot just 20-for-60 from the field, finished 25-4. They were outscored 7-0 to close the first half and 13-2 in the first 9:00 of the second half. Jennifer Rudis had 14 points and eight rebounds, Sara Ettner and Tasha Rodgers each had 12 points, Meg Sullivan had 10 points and Lindsey Merrill chipped in 11 rebounds for Wash. U. The Bears had a 41-30 rebounding advantage and overcame 26 turnovers. Jennifer Ulstad led St. Thomas with 14 points and six rebounds and Missy Pederson added 11 pointsThe Bears scored the final seven points of the first half, capped by Kristi Eller's 3-pointer with six seconds to go, for a 32-26 halftime lead. St. Thomas managed just one field goal in the first nine minutes of the second half as the Bears used a 13-2 run to build a 45-28 lead. The Toms pulled within 59-53 and had the ball with 1:08 to go but turned it over. |
