Sectional
championship game stories Saturday, March 10, 2001 Emmanuel
74, NYU 70 (OT) Emmanuel went into halftime with a 13-point lead and extended it to 16, 51-35, on Julia Demirer's three-point play with 14:59 left in the game. NYU junior Dari Magyar then hit two free throws and two field goals to start a 27-11 NYU run that was capped when junior Meg Barber hit a driving lay-up with five second left to send the game into overtime tied 62-62. NYU (26-2) took its biggest lead of the game, 70-67, on sophomore Allison Herman's field goal with 1:58 left in overtime. However, the Saints scored the last seven points of the game, including six by Demirer, to provide the final margin. "We made some outstanding adjustments at halftime, but I feel we put much distance between us," said NYU head coach Janice Quinn. "I don't think we ran out of gas. It's just very tough right now." The loss snapped a 13-game NYU winning streak. Emmanuel (28-2) won its 23rd straight game and advanced to the Final Four for the first time in the school's history. Demirer finished with a game-high 19 points, while Melanie Sloan added 18 and a game-high 10 rebounds for Emmanuel. Magyar led NYU with 17 points. Barber had 16, while seniors Angela Vicari and Rashida Allen added 10 points each. Herman and senior Jessica Nowak led the Violets with nine rebounds a piece. Magyar, Tillman and Sloan, along with Bowdoin's Kristina Fugate and Cortland's Jen Knox were named to the All-Sectional Team. |
