Unselfishness and team chemistry

"When you think of what it takes to be successful, most often hard work and determination come to most people's minds, which is true. You have to be willing to devote as much time as possible to practice and game preparation. You spend a lot of free time working on your specialized role, whether that be shooting, defense or distributing the ball. Everyone knows you have to have determination to be successful. If you don’t have that driving force, then the smallest obstacle can knock you off your tracks.

"But the two biggest things that come to mind when I think of what it takes to win a Division III basketball championship are unselfishness and team chemistry. You have to be willing to give the ball up when it gives the team a chance to be more successful. To know when it is your time to take control and score. You have to know who can score when, and where they will be most successful at doing so. This ties in along with team chemistry. Sure, you can have one or two stars on your team that can carry you and help you win games. But without team chemistry you have nothing. I believe a team as a whole needs an understanding of one another. You should know what each other is capable of, know each others’ roles, have a sense of where each teammate will be on the court and have respect for each other on the floor. It is a friendship. Finally you have to have heart. You have to be willing to give yourself completely to the game, to your team and to your coaches, and to believe that the impossible is possible.”
