The Lord Jeffs built themselves a large halftime lead, thanks in large part to hot outside shooting. Amherst went 7-for-15 from three-point range in the first half, hitting four in the first five minutes of the game. When sophomore guard Brian Baskauskas hit a three with 15:49 left in the first half, the Lord Jeffs owned a 16-4 lead. Moments later, the Amherst lead reached 14 points, on an Andrew Olson jumper.
The Scots battled back and with 9:23 left in the half had trimmed the lead to just seven, 24-17. Wooster senior Tim Vandervaart was a big part of the 13-6 Wooster run, making four baskets in the span of four minutes. Down by eight, 27-19, with 5:54 left, the Scots were outscored 12-6 in the final minutes of the half and trailed 39-25 at the break.
It was the Wooster defense that controlled the opening eight minutes of the second half, limiting the Lord Jeffs to just two field goals and four points. In the meantime, the Wooster offense scored 21 points and on a James Cooper three-pointer from the top of the key with 12:37 left in the game, the Scots owned their first lead, 46-43.
Tim McLaughlin had an answer for the Lord Jeffs, hitting one of his four three-pointers of the game to even the score at 46. That three sparked a 10-0 Amherst run that ended with another McLaughlin three, with the Lord Jeffs leading 53-46, and with 8:36 left in the game. The Scots again battled back. Tom Port hit two foul shots and Andy Van Horn hit a three and the score read 53-51. On the next Amherst possession, Port stole the ball at half court and got a fast break dunk to tie the score at 53. That was the first of three ties in the final seven minutes.
Tied at 59 with 3:26 left, the Lord Jeffs outscored Wooster 8-1 in the duration of the game, getting their final seven points from the free throw line. The Scots failed to make a field goal in the final 4:49 of the contest.
