Cornell 47, Smith 46

Dubuque, Iowa — No. 11/13 Simpson (10-2, 2-1 IIAC) defeated Dubuque (7-4, 1-1 IIAC) 78-65 in Iowa Conference women’s basketball action Jan. 6 in Dubuque. The Spartans started off strong and took a 20-15 lead with 11:41 to go in the first half. The Storm called timeout, and rattled off a 12-2 run to take a 10 point lead. Simpson controled the rest of the half and took a 42-30 into the break.

Dubuque again started off strong, tying the score at 49 with 13:39 remaining in closing frame. The teams tied three times over the next three minutes with the Spartans taking a 56-53 lead on a Jenica Kester three-pointer at the 10:56 mark. Simpson regained the lead for good soon after as Katelyn Whiton made a layup with just under 10 minutes to go. Simpson scored the next six points to push the lead to four. Dubuque mounted one final charger, closing to within two when Jennifer Bell scored a field goal with 3:26 to go. Whitney Franker connected on a three-pointer the next time down for the Storm to give Simpson a 68-63 lead. The Storm led 70-65 with 2:18 remaining and scored the final eight points of the game to win by 13.

Whiton and Carlie Beals each scored 15 points to pace the Storm. Carrie Larson scored 13 for Simpson. Ashley Katch nabbed 12 rebounds (seven offensive) to go along with five points and three blocks.

Kester led all scorers with 23 points. She was 7-of-12 from three point range, scoring 17 of her points in the second half. Lacey Speer scored 12 for the Spartans.
