The Pointers held just a one-point halftime lead and shot 28 percent while holding a 20-19 lead at intermission before shooting 67 percent in the second half to earn the victory.
Both teams experienced frigid shooting in the first half as UW-Platteville made just one of its last 17 field goal attempts before halftime. The Pioneers shot 29.5 percent for the game and just 24 percent in the first half.
Neither team held bigger than a three-point lead over the final 15 minutes of the first half and the Pointers closed the half with an offensive rebound basket by Haley Houghton to take the one-point advantage.
Cassandra Schultz opened the second half with a three-pointer and, after three straight baskets by Amanda Nechuta, the Pointers expanded the lead to 32-23 on a three-pointer by Laura Neuenfeldt. The lead went to 37-25 on another Neuenfeldt three-pointer with 14:04 left and UW-Platteville came no closer than 10 points the rest of the way.
UW-Stevens Point led 43-33 with 8:52 left and went on a 12-2 run to take a 20-point lead with 5:44 remaining. Chelsea Kranz followed with a three-pointer and a layup for a 60-39 lead and five of her career-high 14 points.
Nechuta also scored 14 points in just 15 minutes of playing time. The senior All-American was saddled with three fouls in five minutes in the first half.
Shannon Boatman had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Pioneers. UW-Stevens Point blocked 13 shots, including nine in the first half.
