CSI SOLVES NEW JERSEY CITY, 75-47, IN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
The College of Staten Island used a 29-5 first half run over 12:05 to turn a 10-10 deadlock into a 39-15 advantage, and easily defeated New Jersey City University, 75-47, in a non-conference game at the CSI Sports and Recreation Center.
Staten Island (17-4, 11-0 CUNYAC) has won 11 straight games and has now won 77 straight when holding opponents under 60 points, the second longest active such streak in the NCAA. NJCU (5-15) has lost seven straight. NJCU still leads the all-time series, 7-3. This was the 10th-ever meeting between the schools and the first since December 27, 1995, a 58-56 overtime win for the Gothic Knights.
Junior guard ERIKA CUBILE (Jersey City, NJ/Academy of St. Aloysius) led NJCU with 16 points (7-of-17), including 10 coming in the first half. Freshman forward DAR-NESHIA JOYNER (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) scored 13 (5-of-10) and grabbed six rebounds. NJCU shot 31.7 percent from the floor (20-of-63) and just 2-of-18 (11.1) from three-point range.
Sophomore forward Kim Thompson (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) led the Dolphins with 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting, after scoring 12 in the first half, many on the fast break. She also grabbed seven boards (five defensive) and had two blocks in 24 minutes. Senior forward Tamara Taylor (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) tacked on 16 points (8-of-12), with five rebounds.
Junior guard Stephanie Iosue (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter’s) tallied game-highs of seven assists and eight rebounds (all defensive). Freshman guard Acasha Gordon (Staten Island, NY/Curtis) finished with 11 points, four steals and three assists in 18 minutes off the bench.
Also for CSI, junior center Jacclyn Rock (Staten Island, NY/New Dorp), the Divisional III national rebounding leader, finished with seven boards (five defensive) on an off-night statistically and scored only six points on 3-of-13. Senior point guard Donna Przybyszewski (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) delivered five assists and four steals with her six points
The Dolphins out-rebounded NJCU in the first half, 26-10, and had a 32-8 edge in paint scoring in the period, behind 63.3 percent shooting (19-of-30). For the game CSI had a 44-26 rebounding edge, and shot 54.0 percent on 34-of-63. The Dolphins finished with a 58-24 edge in paint scoring. CSI had a 20-10 margin in points off turnovers (18 by NJCU), and a 22-8 fast-break scoring total.
NJCU returns to action on Wednesday, February 11 at 7pm when it hosts Farmingdale State in a Women’s Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at the Athletic & Fitness Center. The winner of that game will win the 2003-04 WIAC Championship. NJCU is 4-0 in the WIAC this season.
