Buena Vista 63, Central 62

Storm Lake, Iowa — Last night the Beavers fought off the challenges from a scrappy Dutch squad and came away with a 63-62 win in Siebens Fieldhouse. Kristina Kapler led the Beavers in scoring with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Katie Maguire finished with 12 points and seven rebounds. Seniors Amy Meggers and Kelli Taylor would both end the night with 11 points.

After last night’s results, Coe can clinch the final tournament spot with a victory over Cornell on Saturday. BV has clinched a tie for the Conference title, but has not secured the #1 seed. Should BV and Simpson both finish at 13-3, Simpson would be the #1 seed - BV and Simpson will have to have split for both to finish 13-3. Assuming Wartburg finishes third, both Simpson and BV defeated Wartburg twice. In order for BV to finish 13-3, it will have to have lost to Luther, thus finishing 1-1 vs. the Norse. Simpson has beaten Luther twice this season.

Earlier this year, BVU won a hotly contested battle in Indianola on January 16th by a score of 94-91. Five Beavers finished the night in double figures in scoring. Kelli Taylor and Katie Maguire led BVU with 21 points. Kristina Kapler added 17 points and Amy Meggers finished with 16. The Storm’s Ashley Bogaards led all scorers with 24 points on 11-18 shooting from the field.

The NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Committee has released this week's basketball regional rankings. The rankings include the top teams in each of the eight regions, with records through February 8, 2004. The committee ranks the top six eligible teams in each region. Buena Vista ranked fourth in the West Region. The Beavers are 19-2 overall and 12-1 in the Iowa Conference.

In the NCAA statistics posted on Wednesday, Amy Meggers (Sr., Manilla, Iow) ranks 8th in the nation in points per game with a 21.2 average and 9th in rebounds per game with 11.5 a game. Katie Maguire (So., Treynor, Iowa) ranks 14th in assists per game with 5.8. BVU ranks 2nd in the nation in points scored a game with 82.4, 8th in scoring margin with an average victory of +21.0 points a contest, 9th in won-loss percentage (90%), 10th in rebounding margin with +9.9 rebounds a game, 28th in field goal percentage by sinking 44.3% of their shots, and 32nd in three point field goals made a game (6.2).

Senior Kelli Taylor hit the 1,000 point plateau last week against Coe College. She currently has 1,035 in her career. She ranks third in team scoring this year with an average of 12.1 points per game and has led the Beavers in scoring in four contests.
