Buena Vista 70, Simpson 60

Storm Lake, Iowa — Buena Vista needed two games to win the Iowa Conference title outright this weekend. Saturday night, the team completed the weekend sweep to earn their first IIAC women’s basketball title since 1997. Coach Janet Berry won titles in 1995, 1996, and 1997 and was named Iowa Coach of the year in 1995, 1996, and 1997.

The Beavers trailed at halftime by a score of 22-28 to second place Simpson College. BVU missed every three point attempt in the opening half, but responded by winning the contest at the free throw line by connecting on 15 of 16 chances in the second half.

Four out of five Beaver starters hit double digit scoring, leading the way was Katie Maguire (so., Treynor, Iowa) with 22 points (a perfect 8-8 at the free throw line and 2-3 from the three point area). Kristina Kapler (Jr., Cresco, Iowa) finished with 15 points, Amy Meggers (Sr., Manilla, Iowa) had 14 and Kelli Taylor (Sr., Ponca, Nebraska) added 10 points.

The Simpson Storm was led in scoring by Meghan Kelso (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa). Amanda Pilcher (Sr., Fort Dodge, Iowa) finished with 15 points, but attacked the boards and finished with 16 rebounds.

Buena Vista will host the first round of the Iowa Conference on February 24th in Storm Lake. They are 21-2 overall and 14-1 in the conference.
