Carthage 55, North Park 53

Kenosha, Wis. — The Carthage College women’s basketball team (12-10, 6-6 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) kept its hopes alive for a berth in the CCIW Women’s Basketball Tournament with a 55-53 win over North Park University (12-10, 4-7 CCIW) on Saturday, February 14 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. The Lady Reds are currently in a three-way tie for third place, along with Augustana College (Ill.) and North Central College, all with 6-6 league marks and two games each left to play. Carthage trailed North Park by 10 points at halftime, 31-21, and fell behind by 12, 36-24, at 18:43 second period. The Lady Reds turned this around with a 15-3 run to tie the game, 39-39, at 12:17. Following five ties and three lead changes, Carthage took the lead for good, 51-49, at 3:45. The Lady Reds had a six-point margin, 55-49, at 2:28 before the Vikings’ Shandrel Young hit a free throw at 2:05 and Laura Mount drained a three-pointer with 58 seconds remaining to cut the lead to two points, 55-53. Mount missed what would have been a game-tying jumper with seven seconds to go, and Carthage hung on to win by two, 55-53. The Lady Reds shot 36 percent (19-53), while North Park also shot 36 percent (16-45). Carthage’s Angela Beyers scored a game-high 22 points on six-of-19 field goals, including four-of-11 from three-point range, and a perfect six-of-six from the free-throw line. Kristina Dredge had 16 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, and Tiffany McCrackin chipped in 11 points. Redina Hall topped the Vikings with 13 points. Carthage plays host to conference-opponent Wheaton College (Ill.) on Tuesday, February 17 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. (7:30 p.m.).
