Millikin 68, Wheaton (Ill.) 62

Wheaton, Ill. — The Millikin University women’s basketball team won the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Championship today with a 68-62 win at Wheaton. Millikin concludes the regular season with a 20-4 record and a conference-best 12-2 mark in CCIW play, while Wheaton is 19-6 overall and 11-3 in the CCIW. With the victory Millikin earns the number-one seed and the right to host the CCIW Tournament next Friday and Saturday in Decatur. Friday’s games will be played at 6 and 8 PM and the CCIW Tournament Championship Game will be played on Saturday. Wheaton will be the number-two seed, while the #3 and #4 seeds have not been determined yet. The winner of the CCIW Tournament will earn the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.

Millikin led 16-15 with 3:50 to play in the first half when it closed out the half with a 6-2 scoring advantage for a 22-17 Big Blue lead at halftime. The game remained closely contested for the first six minutes of the second half when Millikin held a narrow 35-34 lead with 13:50 to play in the game. At that point the Big Blue out-scored Wheaton 20-8 to take a 55-43 lead with 8:20 left in the game. Wheaton made a late rally battling to within four points as Millikin led 66-62 with 0:08 left in the game, but the Big Blue would hold on for the win and the conference title.

Wheaton shot 37.9% (22-58) for the game, 22.7% (5-22) from three-point range and 68.4% (13-19) from the free throw line. Millikin shot 40.3% (25-62) from the field, 35.7% (5-14) from behind the three-point arc and 92.9% (13-14) from the charity stripe. Millikin out-rebounded the Thunder 38-36, as each team grabbed 12 offensive rebounds.

Audrey Minott led Millikin with 17 points and three steals, while Lindsey Koehn scored 15 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Angela Vollmer scored 11 points with six rebounds to help the guests’ cause.

Erin Wingerter led Wheaton with 17 points and five rebounds. Senior Sarah Clark scored 11 points and freshman Elizabeth Fox scored 10 points off of the bench.
