Buena Vista 69, Carleton 61

STORM LAKE, Iowa — Buena Vista University Women’s team advanced to the “Sweet 16” this evening for their first time since 1997 with a 69-61 win over the visiting Carleton College Knights.
Buena Vista trailed in the opening half by a score of 27-30 after shooting an icy cold 28.6% from the field. Keeping them in the game were their free throws of which they sank 11 of 12 attempts in the first half. Carleton’s Megan Vig led all scorers and rebounders in the opening half with 11 points and six rebounds. The Knight’s sank 14 of 32 attempts from the field nearly doubling the attempts by the Beavers.

In the second half, it was all Buena Vista and Carleton cooled off. The Beavers shot over 52% as the Knights missed 24 attempts from the field. BVU tied the game at 44-44 on a lay-up by Amy Meggers with just under 10 minutes to go in the game. Amy Meggers hit a jumper top take the lead, a lead they would never relinquish and a lead which never reached more than eight points in the final eight minutes.

Leading all scorers was Meggers who finished with 21 points, 10 rebounds, four steals and two blocks. Katie Maguire finished with 17 points and six assists. Kelli Taylor had 12 points and six rebounds in 34 minutes of action.

Megan Vig led the Knights with 17 points and nine rebounds (five offensively). Linnea Engel had 16 points, six rebounds and teammate Beth Freeman would finish the night with 10 points.

“It was a tale of two halves,” stated BVU Coach Janet Berry. “This was definitely the most physical team we’ve played this year. Meggers and Maguire had a huge second half for us.”

“It was a very physical game,” added Maguire. “There are a couple of teams in the conference that are tough, but not like that. The crowd was definitely the difference and it was awesome.”
