Capital 80, RPI 67

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Jake Beck scored 13 of his game-high 20 points in the first half to lead the Capital University men's basketball team to an 80-67 win over R.P.I. (N.Y.) in the opening round of the Buffalo State Tournament in Buffalo, New York.

Capital (1-0) trailed R.P.I. 6-5 three minutes into the game before going on a 22-6 run capped by a Paul Hershberger jumper to give the Crusaders a 27-12 lead with 8:41 left in the half. Capital would extend that lead to as many as 22 points, leading 43-21 at the break.

The Crusaders cruised in the second half leading by no less than 14 points en route to the 23 point season opening win.

Aside from Beck, a trio of sophomores all scored in double figures as David Johnson had 16, Evan Hartman put in 13 and Jeff Hager poured in 11.

R.P.I. (0-1) got 17 points and 11 rebounds from Tom Schneider.

Capital plays tomorrow in the championship game at 3 p.m. against host Buffalo State College.
