Buena Vista 71, Nebraska Wesleyan 69

LINCOLN, Neb. — Katie Maguire's two free throws with five seconds remaining lifted Buena Vista University to a season-opening 71-69 women's basketball victory at Nebraska Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon. Maguire poured in a career-high 29 points to lead the Beavers to the non-conference win.

Nebraska Wesleyan took a slim 38-36 lead into halftime. Both squads were able to take leads of five points in the second half, but neither team was able to pull away. With the game tied 67-67, freshman Jeni Schweitzberger, who tallied 12 points on the day, calmly stepped to the free throw line and drained a pair of free throws to put the Beavers in front 69-67. Nebraska Wesleyan's Samantha Porter made a shot to knot the game up at 69-69 with 19 ticks left on the clock. She then fouled Maguire 12 seconds later, setting the state for Maguire's late-game heroics.

Amy Meier led the Prairie Wolves with 15 points. Meagan Wells and Angie Schlecht each added a dozen in the losing effort. Nebraska Wesleyan held a commanding 33 to 22 rebounding edge, but turned the ball over 29 times.

Kristina Kapler contributed 10 points for the Beavers, who shot 24 of 30 from the free throw line. Kelli Staley grabbed a team-best six rebounds.

Buena Vista, 1-0 on the season, returns to play on Tuesday, November 23 by traveling to New Ulm, Minnesota to face Martin Luther College. Nebraska Wesleyan will host Dana College on the same day.
