The New Jersey City University women’s basketball team exploded to a 32-6 lead in the first half, and opened its 2004-05 season by routing Medgar Evers College, 70-37, in the first round of the 2004 Gothic Knight Tip-Off Tournament at NJCU’s Athletic and Fitness Center.
NJCU (1-0) will face SUNY-Oneonta on Sunday at 3pm for the tournament championship. The Red Dragons defeated FDU-Florham, 70-58, in Saturday’s earlier first-round game. Medgar Evers will face FDU in the 1pm consolation game.
NJCU was led by freshman forward ARNESE GOODMAN (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln), who scored 16 points on 8-of-9 shooting, with three steals in only 18 minutes off the bench. Senior guard ERIKA CUBILE (Jersey City, NJ/Academy of Saint Aloysius) had 12 points (6-of-9) in 16 minutes.
Freshman guard BETH AMADEO (Bayonne, NJ/Marist) had eight points and five assists in 16 minutes, while her sister, junior guard BERNICE AMADEO (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) dished six assists, with six points and four steals in 17 minutes. Freshman center TIFFANY BOYD (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) swiped seven steals and delivered four assists.
Junior power forward MEGAN KABBA (Newark, NJ/Arts) finished with six points, six steals and five rebounds in 20 minutes. She was the only player on NJCU’s roster to see more than 18 minutes, as all 14 in the lineup saw considerable action.
Medgar Evers received game-highs of 24 points (9-of-21) and 11 rebounds (six offensive) from senior forward RANNIE MILES (Brooklyn, NY/Prospect Heights). In 33 minutes, she scored nearly two-thirds of the Cougars’ offense. She committed nine turnovers.
While NJCU built a 32-6 lead in the first half, MEC did not score a point for an 11:02 stretch (13:51 to 2:49), and experienced a drought of 13:03 (13:51 to 00:48) without a field goal.
NJCU led 41-12 at the half, while shooting 51.4 percent (18-of-35). Meanwhile, the Cougars shot only 14.3 percent from the floor in the opening period (4-for-28), before finishing at 25.9 percent overall (14-of-54), behind Miles, who notched 18 of her teams’ 25 second-half points.
NJCU finished shooting 47.0 percent (31-of-66), and owned a 42-0 advantage in bench scoring. The Knights took advantage of 36 MEC turnovers and turned that benefit into a 22-0 edge in fast-break points. The two schools combined for 61 turnovers. NJCU swiped 28 steals.
