The LadyJackets (0-2) jumped out to an early lead, but the Crusaders (2-1) quickly responded and held a slim lead throughout most of the first half. LETU trailed 26-21 at halftime despite shooting 21.1 percent from the floor, including 0-for-15 on three-point attempts.
The second half began with the LadyJackets’ defense forcing some turnovers and the offense slowly chipping away at the lead. The team took its first lead of the game at the 10-minute mark on a Taryn Mount (Pasadena/Rayburn HS) three-pointer. The game went back and forth and it looked like LETU would take home the win after Katrina Visina (Rowlett/Rowlett HS) buried a three-pointer to give the team a 45-42 lead with five minutes remaining.
The Crusaders responded after Visina’s trifecta by going on a 13-0 run and were able to take control of the game. The LadyJackets eventually scored, but it was too late and Dallas protected its home court with the 61-49 victory.
The LadyJackets shot 26 percent from the floor for the game and were just 2-of-29 from three-point range. A few positives for the team were committing only 14 turnovers and pulling down 22 offensive rebounds. Unfortunately, the team’s shooting woes extended to the free-throw line where they went 7-of-18 for the game.
The Crusaders committed 22 turnovers, but out rebounded LETU, 54-46. Dallas shot 34 percent from the field and went 20-of-30 from the foul line. The had four players score in double figures and were led by Ana Castillo’s 12-point, 15-rebound performance.
The LadyJackets were led by Visina’s 13 points, five assists and five rebounds. Mount finished the game with seven points and eight rebounds, while Denee McKay (Katy/Cy-Springs HS) and Kim Mahone (Bossier City, LA/Parkway HS) each had strong games on the inside.
