Buena Vista had a difficult time finding an answer for the physical post play of the Colorado School of Mines, which improved to 2-2 with the victory. The top two players in the paint for the Orediggers, Ashley Gronewoller and Angela Pearson, combined for 46 points and 20 rebounds.
Buena Vista struggled out of the gate hitting just two of its first 12 field goal attempts. Coach Janet Berry picked up a technical foul before the Beavers hit their first field goal over four minutes into the game. BVU shot just 10 of 34 (29%) from the field in the first half as the Colorado School of Mines took a 40-30 lead into the halftime break.
The Colorado School of Mines, an NCAA II member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, continued to inch away from Buena Vista in the second half as the Beavers never cut the deficit to single digits.
Gronewoller finished the game 10 of 12 from the field for 24 points and Pearson was 10 of 16 from the floor for 22 points. Iva Tomova scored 19 points. The Orediggers outshot the Beavers 55% to 36% from the field.
Buena Vista hit just two of 12 first half three-point attempts and was limited to eight for 25 shooting from behind the arc for the game. The Beavers were only outrebounded 44-39 and pulled down 21 offensive rebounds despite giving up nearly three inches at the forward and center positions.
Staley reached the 20-point mark for the fourth time in five games this season by shooting six of 14 from the field and seven of nine from the free throw line. Maguire, who was one of eight from the field in the first half, also reached the 20-point plateau for the fourth time this year, however nine of her points came in the last 1:10 of the game. Jess Griggs added 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Buena Vista, now 2-3 on the season, will continue play at the Classic on Sunday by facing Colorado College, who beat Cornell College on Saturday. Tipoff at Volk Gymnasium in Golden is scheduled for 4 p.m. central time.
