STORM LAKE, Iowa — With six players scoring in double digits, the Buena Vista University women’s basketball team won against Martin Luther College 85-58 in a non-conference match at Siebens Fieldhouse. BVU jumped out to a quick 8-0 lead just three minutes into the game. In the 12th minute of play, a steal by Jess Griggs, with an outlet pass to Katie Maguire led to a fast break jumper by Katie Ernst putting the Beavers up 27-10. For the rest of the game Beavers did not allow the Knights to get within 16 points.
Ernst was a perfect 8 for 8 from the field and had a total of 17 points and five steals to lead Buena Vista off of the bench. Kelli Staley, who has been playing strong this year, kept her streak going as she scored 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds.
Coming off the bench, Lindsey Meyer was hot as she scored 12 points. Maguire dished out nine assists and had a total of 11 points on the night. Melissa Putney played strong under the basket as she battled to get 11 points. Courtney Stoelk was 4 for 7 and contributed 10 points to the BVU victory.
As a team, the Beavers shot 35 of 67 (52.2%) from the field and were 4 of 11 (36.4%) on three-pointers.
Martin Luther, now 0-7 on the year, was lead by Emma Babinec who had 15 points. Babinec also grabbed a game-high eight rebounds. The Knights were 19 of 60 (31.7 %) from the field.
The Beavers improved to 4-3 with the victory. They will go on to face Division II Augustana College this Saturday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
