The Centre College women's basketball team shot only 33.3% (18-54) and committed 19 turnovers in a 70-45 loss to Franklin College, Saturday, Dec. 10, in Danville, Ky.
The first half was closely contested in the early going, with neither team leading by more than seven points. After a Monica Vonderbrink three pointer pulled the Colonels within 23-19 at the 7:00 mark, Franklin went on 17-2 run to close the half and take a 40-21 lead into the break.
The Grizzlies continued to control the game in the second half opening with a 20-5 run to extend the lead to 60-26 with 8:02 remaining. The Colonels cut the lead to 23 points, but ran out of time falling for the sixth time in its last seven games.
Senior forward Chelsea Wessel and freshman guard Alison Denbow paced the Colonels with eight points apiece. Wessel also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while Denbow added four assists.
Franklin (6-1) was led by center Becky Ballard's 18 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals. Forward Kelly Snider added 14 points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Centre, now 2-6 overall, Sunday, Dec. 18, when they travel to Granville, Ohio to play Denison University. Tip-off for the non-conference game is set for 1:00 p.m.
