Mt. Marty bagged two three-point shots to start the game. Buena Vista tied it up at 9-9 with a fast-break pass and easy lay-up by Courtney Stoelk. The Beavers marched away from Mt. Marty, leading by as much as 14 at one point late in the half. Mt Marty committed four turnovers in the space of two and a half minutes late in the first half. The Beavers left the floor for halftime with a double digit lead, 33-23.
Tracy Hartwig sparked Buena Vista with a 3-point shot less than a minute into the second half. Mt. Marty did not back down, as the Lancers went on a 16-2 run to gain a one point 39-38 lead over the Beavers 5 1/2 minutes into the second half. Leading 51-50 with just over seven minutes to play, Buena Vista went on a 22-7 run to close out the contest and seal the victory.
Katie Maguire led the Beavers in scoring with 16 points, nine of which came at the free throw line. She also dished out five assists and stole the ball six times. Hartwig added 12 points and Kelli Staley scored 11 points despite making just one field goal. Staley also had one steal, the 200th of her career.
As a team, the Beavers converted on 33 of 42 free throw opportunities and held a 44-33 rebounding advantage. The Lancers were just 3 of 8 from the free throw line. Buena Vista, which has now won 33 straight regular-season home games, had 20 turnovers while Mt. Marty had 20.
Mt. Marty was led by Tevan Wenbourne who put up 12 points. Emily Witte added 11 points and Carrie Ahlers chipped in 10 and yanked down 11 rebounds.
This win improves Buena Vista’s record to 5-4 on the season while Mt. Marty fell to 7-8. The Beavers are next in action on Friday, December 30 against Nebraska Wesleyan University in Storm Lake. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 pm.
