Freshman guard NATASHIA CLACKLEY (Long Branch, NJ/Long Branch) took advantage of her third career start by notching a game-high 16 points, while senior guard ERIKA CUBILE (Jersey City, NJ/Academy of Saint Aloysius) poured in 15 points and six assists as New Jersey City University easily defeated Mitchell College, 75-52, in a women’s basketball independent contest at the John J. Moore Athletic and Fitness Center.
NJCU improves to 10-8 overall with its second win a row and fifth in the last six games. Mitchell (2-7) has lost its last seven contests. This was the first meeting between the schools in women’s basketball.
NJCU junior guard BERNICE AMADEO (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), the Knights’ career leader in assists with 301, became the first player to reach the 300 plateau in the category. She had a near double-double, finishing with 11 points (4-9), eight assists, and three steals in 34 minutes. She has dished 19 assists in her last two outings.
Clackley hit 7-of-9 from the field, and added five steals in 22 minutes to eclipse her previous scoring high of 12. Cubile matched her season high, shooting 5-of-7 from the floor in 22 minutes off the bench.
Freshman center TIFFANY BOYD (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) tallied a game and career high with nine rebounds, while rejecting a career-high five blocks. Junior power forward MEGAN KABBA (Newark, NJ/Arts) matched Boyd with the nine rebounds (eight defensive), adding seven points, and three steals.
Sophomore point guard LATRESE McNAIR (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth), who ranks No. 2 in Division III in steals per game at 4.9 per contest, swiped five steals while sinking eight points (4-7) and delivering five assists. It was the 11th time in 18 games this season that the sophomore has picked at least five steals in a game. She moved into third place on the single-season charts with her 88th steal, and moved within eight of matching the school record of 96 set in 1983-84.
NJCU freshman guard STEPHANIE HOGAN (North Arlington, NJ/St. Dominic Academy) posted seven points in 12 minutes off the bench.
Freshman forward Jewels Akins (Highland Mills, NY/Monroe-Woodbury) was the only Pequot player to reach double figures, finishing with 10 points (4-8). Freshman forward Jessica London (Lebanon, CT/Lyman Memorial) had nine points and eight rebounds, but shot 3-of-15. Sophomore center Julie Graham (Waterbury, CT/John F. Kennedy) chipped in eight points and eight rebounds.
The game was close with 3:23 left in the first period, before NJCU uncorked a 12-1 run to pull in front by 12, 35-23, at the half. NJCU, which owned a 30-14 edge in fast break points for the contest, registered eight during the streak. Cubile scored five points and Clackley added four during the run.
NJCU extended the spurt to 20-5, when it possessed a 43-27 lead at 15:28 of the second period. Leading 57-38 at 8:53, the Knights rang up a 12-0 run to open the margin to 69-38, before clearing the bench. The 31-point gap was the largest of the game.
NJCU shot .492 overall (30-61), including .571 in the second half (16-28). Mitchell converted only .264 of its shots (19-72).
Despite committing three more turnovers than Mitchell (30-27), NJCU still possessed a 34-19 advantage in points off giveaways, and outscored the visitors bench, 33-19.
NJCU faces the College of Staten Island at 6pm on Saturday, February 5 in the third of six consecutive home games at the John J. Moore Athletic and Fitness Center.
