Stromquist had 13 points and eight rebounds in the second half, while Kelsey had 11 points and eight rebounds in the second half, as the Auggies maintained the lead and held off a late Hamline rally.
Augsburg is now 3-17 overall, 3-14 in MIAC play. After losing its first 13 games to start the season, Augsburg has won three of its last seven games, all at home. Hamline is now 6-13 overall, 4-12 in MIAC play.
Augsburg never trailed in the game, building an 11-point first-half lead on the strength of an 8-0 run over a three-minute span late in the stanza. Augsburg led 36-25 at halftime and pulled away by as many as 16 points, before Hamline slowly cut the advantage to just three points, 57-54 with 3:34 left. But the Auggies scored eight of the next 10 points to take a nine-point advantage.
Rachel Cherry (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) scored 21 points and had six rebounds for the Auggies, scoring in double figures for the fourth time in her last five games. Amy Jones (Sr., Brooklyn Park, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) had seven points and a season-high 10 rebounds, to go with five assists and two steals.
Hamline had 10 different players score, with none in double figures. Erin Petrich (So., White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Megan Haugen (So., New Richmond, Wis.) scored nine points apiece, while Kelly Lines (Jr., North Branch, Minn.) had eight points.
Carolyn Korchik (Jr., Bloomington, Minn./Kennedy HS), Andrea Eilertson (So., Kiester, Minn./United South Central HS) and Allison Bratsch (Fr., New London, Minn./New London-Spicer HS) had seven points each, and Laurisa Ewert (Jr., Andover, Minn./Anoka HS) had six points, 13 rebounds and three steals.
Augsburg took advantage of a poor shooting night by Hamline, as the Pipers could manage just 25.3 percent (22-of-87) from the field, including 8-of-32 (25.0 percent) from beyond the arc. Hamline also converted 27 offensive rebounds into 19 second-chance points. Hamline outrebounded Augsburg by a 59-52 margin.
Meanwhile, Augsburg shot 41.7 percent from the field (25-of-60), and also held a free-throw advantage, converting 19-of-31 from the free-throw line, compared to 10-of-16 for Hamline. Augsburg also claimed six blocked shots, with Kelsey getting three blocks and Stromquist netting two.
Both teams are back in action on Wednesday (2/9) at 5:30 p.m. with road games, as Augsburg travels to Concordia-Moorhead and Hamline travels to St. Mary’s. Both are part of men's and women's basketball doubleheaders, with the men's games starting at 7:30 p.m.
