Wesleyan 45, Fitchburg State 42

Fitchburg, MA — Hannah Stubbs registered game-highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds as visiting Wesleyan rallied from an 11-point second half deficit to defeat Fitchburg State 45-42 in non conference women’s basketball action. The Cardinals used a suffocating defense in the second half that limited FSC to just three field goals in the entire stanza.

With the Falcons clinging to a 40-37 lead, Stubbs helped break a five minute scoring drought by both teams by rattling off three straight baskets in just over a minute and half to give Wesleyan a 43-40 advantage with just 2:15 remaining. Stubbs, who shot 10 for 12 on the night from the field, connected on all six of her second half field goal attempts. The Cardnials (19-3) did not have another played in double figures but did receive strong efforts from Nora Bowman (9 points and 4 assists) and Ashley Mastrangelo (9 rebounds and 5 assists).

Fitchburg State (15-5) was paced offensively by sophomore D’Yana Delpero who tallied all of her team-high 13 points in the first half, including nailing a trio of 3-pointers. Samantha Sweeney added 8 points and 7 rebounds for the Falcons, who enjoyed a 29-22 halftime edge and scored the first four points of the second half.

The Falcons return to action on Thursday when they host Emerson at the Recreation Center at 7pm. Wesleyan is off until Saturday when they close out NESCAC play with a match up at travel partner Connecticut College.
