Bethel 73, St. Thomas 69
Junior guard Jen Ahlberg scored a game-high 20 points, including two clinching free throws with :04 remaining, as visiting Bethel held on for a 73-69 win over St. Thomas in MIAC women’s basketball play Wednesday night on the Tommies' floor.
The Royals (6-5 overall, 4-3 MIAC) never trailed as they snapped a 20-game losing streak to the Tommies dating back to January 1995.
Heather Davis had 12 points and Bridget Weber added 11 for Bethel. The Royals made 8-of-13 from 3-point range and 15-of-24 at the foul line to UST’s 3-of-4 free throws.
Junior guard Vel Williams had 12 points, eight rebounds and five assists and freshman Patricia Hall had 11 points and seven rebounds for St. Thomas (5-6, 3-4).
Bethel shot 56% from the field in the first half en route to 42-33 halftime lead. The Royals broke to leads of 9-2, 18-6 and 34-16.
St. Thomas used a 17-8 run to climb within nine points at halftime. The Toms pulled within 59-56 with 8:35 left on a three-point play by Vel Williams.
The Toms pulled within two points on Hall’s basket with :05 remaining. Bethel was fouled on the inbounds play and iced the victory with Ahlberg's free throws.
The Tommies play Saturday at St. Mary's and Monday at home vs. Concordia.
