Fitchburg State 78, Baruch 58

Fitchburg, MA — Five different Fitchburg State players scored in double digits as the Falcons defeated visiting Baruch 78-58 in women’s basketball action Thursday evening. The non-conference match-up featured two of the more surprising teams this season in Division III .

Junior Katie Redican (Meridan, CT/Maloney) came off the bench to score 20 points for FSC (10-2) while tying her own school record with six 3-pointers. Classmate Jen Fontaine (Dracut, MA) added 12 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists as the Falcons snapped a two-game losing streak.

D’Yana Delpero (Peabody, MA), starting for just the third time this season, amassed 17 points, while Jenn Kirkland (Somerville, MA) connected on all four of her field goal attempts en route to scoring 12 points. Redican, Delpero and Kirkland all had 10 points at the intermission as the Falcons opened up a 38-28 advantage at the break.

Samantha Sweeney (Haverhill, MA), playing with a broken nose, registered 10 points and 6 rebounds and point guard Cortney Kelly (Hanson/Whitman-Hanson) dished out 7 assists while contributing 5 points on the evening.

Baruch (10-3) received 21 points from junior Jessenia Marrero (Flushing, NY/Francis Lewis), including six 3-pointers. Wednesday night, Marrero scored her 1000th career point in a 76-48 CUNYAC home win versus York (NY). Rachquel Reid (Bronx, NY/Washington Irving) added 12 points for the Bearcats.
