Central 80, Cornell 32

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Central College opened with a 20-4 run and cruised to an 80-32 Iowa Conference women’s basketball win at Cornell College Saturday.

The Dutch were never threatened, taking a commanding 45-14 lead at intermission, allowing coach Mick Angel to empty the bench.

Forward Ashley Nekola had 15 points while guard Rachel Lenox had 14 points, five rebounds and six assists. Guard Aimee Schmidt chipped in with 11 points, four boards and three assists.

Central shot 55.9 percent from the field in the first half and 41.6 percent for the game while Cornell connected on just 26.3 percent for the day. Rams center Melanie Manz had a game-high 18 points and 14 rebounds.

Central is 5-9 overall and 2-4 in league action. Cornell is 0-13 overall and 0-6 in the conference.

The Dutch return home to take on Loras College Wednesday in an Iowa Conference women’s-men’s doubleheader at Kuyper Gym at 6 p.m.
