Concordia-Moorhead 73, St. Olaf 62

MOORHEAD,Minn. — Three weeks before the end of the regular season, the Concordia coaching staff decided to pay tribute to the two seniors on the roster. In the end, it was the two seniors that contributed to the Cobber victory celebration. Jamie Visness scored a game-high 21 points and Mandy Pearson added another 20 as Concordia kept a pesky St. Olaf team from rallying in the second half and posted a 73-62 win.

The win was the eighth straight for Concordia, and ties them for second place in the MIAC because of St. Ben's loss at Carleton on Saturday. The eight-game winning streak is the longest last season when they won 10 consecutive games. The Cobbers are now 10-3 in the MIAC and 12-4 overall. St. Olaf falls to 3-10 in the MIAC and drops their overall mark to 4-13.

Concordia never trailed in the game. They scored eight of the first ten points in the game and then kept the margin around ten points, taking a 39-31 lead after the first half.

In the second half, the Cobbers pulled away by as many as 13 points, but every time they threatened to run away, the Oles mustered a run of their own to keep the lead within striking distance. St. Olaf got as close as seven points at 63-56 with 1:48 remaining, before Concordia closed out the final seconds on a 10-6 run.

Besides the sensational seniors, Concordia freshman post player Melanie Hageman also factored in double figures. Hageman scored 14 points, and has now scored at least 10 points in 11 of the team's 16 games. Tori Ehlert grabbed a team-high, seven rebounds for the Cobbers.

St. Olaf had two players scored in double-digits and another miss a double-double by a single point. Holly Grimsrud and Christine Schwichtenberg each scored 12 points, and freshman Danielle Stoermer collected a game-high 10 rebounds and nine points.

Neither team could get their shooting sights aligned in the second half. After shooting 45.2% (14-of-31) from the floor and 41.7% (5-of-12) from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes, the Cobbers proceeded to flail away at 36.4% (8-of-22) from the floor and missed all three of their shots from behind the arc in the second period. St. Olaf fell off even more dramatically. They went 11-of-26 (42.3%) from the field and 2-of-8 (25.0%) from 3-point land to start the game, and then made 12-of-36 (33.3%) from the field and 0-of-7 from long-range.

Concordia will finish their four-game, seven-day homestand when they host St. Mary's on Sunday January, 30 at 1:00pm. The game can be heard live on 1280AM "The Fan" radio in the Fargo-Moorhead area and via the internet at www.gocobbers.com.
