Staten Island 63, William Paterson 54

WAYNE, NJ — Sophomore guard Acasha Gordon scored 18 of her game-high 29 points in the second half as the College of Staten Island produced a 63-54, non-conference victory Monday at the Rec Center.

Gordon scored six of her points during an 8-0 run to start the second half, staking the Dolphins (18-2) to a 35-31 lead with 16:18 remaining. They shot 61.9 percent (13-for-21) in the second half.

The Pioneers (10-8), who were led by freshman forward Sheakia Jackson’s 12 points and seven rebounds), got within 51-50 with 6:40 remaining after a free throw by sophomore guard Luci Custis. However, the Dolphins countered with another 8-0 run.as Gordon hit a 3-pointer and freshman guard Nicole Stefanski – who had 12 points, seven rebounds and seven assists – canned three free throws.

William Paterson led 29-27 at halftime, but CSI held the Pioneers to 28.0 percent shooting (7-for-25) over the final 20 minutes.

Junior guard Kim Thompson added 11 points, while senior center Jacclyn Rock was held to seven points and seven rebounds, well below her season averages of 14.4 points and 14.5 rebounds.

Also for William Paterson, Custis dropped in 11 points and freshman guard Michelle Pellichero added nine, while senior center Adrienne Kopko contributed eight points and eight rebounds while playing a solid defensive game.

William Paterson returns to action Wednesday, Feb. 2, when it hosts NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark at 8 p.m. CSI hosts Brooklyn College the same day at 5:30 p.m.
