The MSOE Women’s Basketball team opened up its home schedule with a 78-50 loss to Lawrence University at the Kern Center Tuesday night.
The Raiders cut a 13-point Viking lead to 10 by the end of the first half, but a 17-5 run to open up the second ended all hopes of a Raider comeback.
Raider Head Coach Jessica Ott said the team needs to improve on its rebounding.
“They (Vikings) had 18 more rebounds than we did,” Ott said. “It’s hard to win games when that happens.”
Carrie Van Groll (Kaukauna, Wis. / Little Chute) led the charge for the Vikings, scoring 26 points and grabbing eight rebounds. Molly Bouressa notched a double/double with 11 points and 10 boards. Claire Getzoff also scored in double figures for the Vikings with 19.
The Raiders shot 80 percent from the free throw line, making 20 of 25. That was a significant improvement over their 58 percent effort in the Rockford Tournament this past weekend.
“I was happy with our free throw shooting tonight – we did very well,” Ott said.
Catherine Chappell (Lemont, Ill. /Lemont) of the Raiders also recorded a double/double with 21 points and 12 rebounds. Cortney Femling (Green Bay, Wis. / Bay Port) went seven for eight from the line and scored 12 points for the Raiders.
MSOE (0-3) opens up its conference schedule next Wednesday night against Lakeland College at the Kern Center. Tip-off is at 7 p.m.
The Raiders will focus on mental toughness and ball handling while preparing to battle Lakeland next week.
“We need to gain confidence and our guards need to do a better job bringing the ball up the court,” Ott said.
