Buena Vista 113, Finlandia 75

LA CROSSE, Wis. — The Buena Vista University women's basketball team broke into the win column with a 113-75 victory over Finlandia University at the Holiday Inn Express Thanksgiving Classic hosted by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. The offensive outburst is the second-most points the Beavers have scored in a single game in school history.

Kelli Staley led Buena Vista with a career-high 21 points and 12 rebounds. It was her fourth career double-double. Katie Maguire added 20 points, six steals, and five assists. Staley and Maguire put up their impressive numbers despite playing only 26 minutes apiece as the Beavers snapped a four-game losing streak that dated back to last season.

Trailing 14-10 eight minutes into the game, Buena Vista went on a 14-0 run. After Finlandia trimmed the deficit to 28-19, Buena Vista went on a 25-11 run to close out the first half and never saw its lead dip into single digits again as the Beavers won the first ever meeting between the two schools.

Finlandia, which fell to 1-3 with a loss, was led by Brigitte LaPointe's 22 point and nine rebound performance. Finlandia connected on just 26 of 85 field goal attempts (31%) including 11 of 53 (21%) from three-point range.

Buena Vista dominated the inside, outscoring Finlandia 64-16 in the paint. The Beavers also held a 63-48 rebounding advantage.

Jess Griggs and Courtney Stoelk each contributed 17 points in the victory. Buena Vista improved to 1-2 with the win.

The 113 points scored is the highest total for Buena Vista since the 1996-97 season. That year, the Beavers set the school record for most points in a single game in a 115-44 rout over Martin Luther College.

Buena Vista, which has won the last two Iowa Conference championships, will host Central College on Tuesday, November 29 in the conference opener. The contest at Siebens Fieldhouse will tip off at 6 p.m.
