Buena Vista 101, Central 69

STORM LAKE, Iowa — Katie Maguire scored 28 points and became the school's all-time assist leader as Buena Vista University defeated Central College 101-69 in the Iowa Conference women's basketball opener at Siebens Fieldhouse. The Beavers shot 61% from the field and 67% from three-point range as they defeated the Dutch for the sixth straight time.

Buena Vista jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the first three minutes and did not allow Central to get closer than seven points the rest of the way. Buena Vista raced out to a 44-23 halftime lead. The Beavers scored the 12 of the first 14 points in the second half and did not allow the Dutch to get within 24 points for the duration of the game.

Maguire ended the night 9 of 11 from the floor and 4 for 4 from three-point range. She also dished out her 427th career assist and became the school's all-time leader in that category, breaking the previous school record which was held by Keely Bowman.

Kelli Staley continued her hot start to the season by pouring in 24 points and grabbing five steals. Staley shot 10 of 13 from the floor. Jess Griggs added 17 points. The Buena Vista starting five shot a combined 27 of 38 (71%) from the field and 9 of 10 (90%) from three-point range.

Central was led by Katy Paxton who had 17 points. Emily De Jong grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for Central. The Dutch shot 25 of 64 (39%) from the field.

Buena Vista, which scored 113 points in its previous game against Finlandia University, has now reached the century mark in back-to-back games for only the second time in school history. The Beavers scored 105 and 115 points in back-to-back games against Occidental College and Martin Luther College during the 1996-97 season.

Buena Vista improved to 2-2 on the season while Central fell to 0-3. The Beavers will resume play this weekend by traveling to Golden, Colorado to square off against the Colorado School of Mines and Colorado College.
