New York, N.Y. — Naesha Tyler-Moore (Matteson, Ill./Rich Central) scored 14 points and sank six key free throws down the stretch to help the Bearcats defeat upset-minded John Jay, 61-55, in a conference home game played on Saturday afternoon in the ARC Arena.

The victory clinches the # 1 seed in this month’s CUNYAC Tournament hosted by the College of Staten Island. In addition, the team improves to 16-5 overall and stay undefeated in conference play with an 11-0 mark. They also own a nine-game winning streak.

The Bearcats started the game strong by jumping out to a 16-2 lead and entered halftime up, 29-16. However, the Bloodhounds (13-10, 7-4 CUNYAC) started the second half with a 21-7 run to lead, 37-36, with 9:14 remaining.

They would eventually lead by as much as three points (44-41), but the Bearcats fought back with key baskets down the stretch.

Racquel Reid (Bronx, N.Y./Washington Irving) scored one of the best with a 30-foot bank shot as the shot clock expired for a 45-44 lead with 5:05 left.

Tyler-Moore then sank six free throws and connected on a big three-pointer in the final three minutes to help seal the victory and avert the upset bid by John Jay.

Lashannen Hogue (Yonkers, N.Y./Roosevelt) put together a monster game for the visitors with 23 points and 22 rebounds, while Melissa Escalera (Bronx, N.Y./Stevenson) also notched a double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Chiresse Paradise (Chicago, III./Rich Central) and Reid each finished with 13 points.

The women’s team will be in action this Monday night with a non-conference game at Stevens Tech in Hoboken, New Jersey. Tip off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
