Buena Vista 88, Dubuque 60

STORM LAKE, Iowa — Kelli Staley scored a game-high 20 points as the Buena Vista University women’s basketball team defeated the University of Dubuque 88-60 in the Iowa Conference regular season finale.

The Beavers shot 46% from the field and had four players score in double digits. Next to Staley who was the leading rebounder with seven, Jess Griggs put up 16 points with eight of those coming from the free-throw line. Tracy Hartwig also helped in the scoring department as she had 13 points.

Katie Maguire was held to 10 points but was dishing out the ball to her teammates as she tallied up a team high of seven assists. Lindsey Meyer was just shy of scoring double digits as she had nine points.

BVU had an 18-point lead at halftime with the scoreboard reading 44-26. The team was fired up as they began the second half with a 3-pointer by Hartwig, followed shortly after with a steal by Griggs and then a jumper by Staley. With less then five minutes expiring off the clock, the Beavers had achieved a 59-31 lead and the Spartans weren’t able to close in after that.

Brittney Dickey netted a team-high of 17 points for Dubuque, which dropped to 10-15 on the season and 4-12 in the conference. The Spartans shot 35% from the field.

The game marked the Beavers last regular season home game and a memorable senior awards dedication. All the seniors earned a starting position in tonight’s game. The seniors included; Maguire, Staley, Griggs, and Yuvanca Russ, along with student coaches Amber Connolly and Holly McDonough.

Buena Vista, now 16-9 on the season and 11-5 in the IIAC, will host a first round conference tournament game on Tuesday, February 21 against Cornell College. The Beavers will be the third seed and the Rams will be the sixth seed. The two squads split the regular-season series.
