Macalester 54, Caltech 31

PASADENA, Calif. — Macalester gained its second win of the season, beating Caltech 54-31 Wednesday night in Pasadena. While the national football championship game was being played across town at the Rose Bowl, the Macalester Scots snuck through traffic and posted their best defensive effort of the season, holding Caltech to a 23% shooting performance (13-for-57).

Macalester improves to 2-9 on the season, while Caltech drops to 0-11. This was the first of three games played this week in the Los Angeles area for the Scots. On Thursday (Jan. 5) the Scots play an afternoon game at Pomona-Pitzer, and on Saturday (Jan. 7) they play an afternoon tilt at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.

The Scots scored the game’s first eight points and never found themselves behind. The Techers cut the margin to one point at 15-14 with 6:12 left in the first half, but Macalester closed out the period with a 14-4 run to go up 29-18 at the intermission.

Caltech scored the first basket of the second half before Mac put things away with a 14-4 rally to go up 43-24 with 12:16 left. The Scots were never threatened after that.

Elise Pagel and Callie PaStarr each scored eight first half points to lead Macalester to its good start. Pagel finished with 16 points while handing out five assists, while PaStarr finished with 10 points and five assists. Meghan Garrity scored nine points to go along with four assists and four steals, while PaStarr, Brittini Chicuata and Diedre Jackson each pulled down eight rebounds to help give Mac a 56-38 advantage on the boards.

Lea Kunesh scored 12 points and dished out four assists to pace Caltech. Lindsay King added eight points.
