Jessica Heintz scored 20 points, going 4-for-5 from three-point range, and Anne Keeley added 17 points for the Cobbers, who made nine first-half 3-pointers.
The Cobbers (6-3, 4-1 MIAC) canned six consecutive three-pointers during one stretch in the first half, turning a 12-3 deficit into a 22-14 lead. All nine of Concordia’s first-half field goals were from beyond the arc.
Oken-Berg's eight blocked shots broke the previous record of five by current Carleton volleyball assistant coach Keely Glasrud-Kelly '96. She moved her season blocked-shots total to 33, also a single-season Carleton record in only the team’s 11th contest.
Megan Vig added 14 points and seven rebounds for the Knights (5-6, 3-3 MIAC), who lost for the fourth straight time. Carleton has failed to crack the 60-point barrier in each of the last four losses.
The Knights grabbed the early nine-point lead by connecting on five of their first eight shots, but they made only five of their next 16 in trailing, 30-23, at the half.
The Knights pulled with three with 8 minutes, 35 seconds left as Vig drilled a triple, Sarah Lincoln scored inside and Oken-Berg made two free throws and Annie Isler one, but the Cobbers used a 10-3 spurt over a five-minute stretch to seal the victory. Carleton struggled mightily during the string, going 1-for-9 from the floor in scoring only two field goals over the game’s final six minutes.
Rebounding was even at 31 each and both teams turned it over 15 times. The game basically hinged on shooting, and more precisely outside shooting as the Cobbers made 10-of-19 from three-point range and the Knights managed only 2-for-8 from beyond the arc. Carleton’s frontcourt accounted for 46 of the team’s 53 points.
The Knights are now off until next week when they’ll be at the College of St. Catherine on Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7:30 p.m. The Cobbers also play the Wildcats next in St. Paul on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m.
