Wartburg 76, Central 60

WAVERLY, Iowa — A chilly shooting touch proved costly as the Central College women’s basketball team tumbled to Wartburg College Tuesday 76-60.

Central (1-10 overall, 1-3 Iowa Conference) hit just 34.9 percent from the floor and an icy 20 percent from 3-point range on a 4-of-17 effort.

Wartburg (5-7 overall, 2-2 conference) also dominated on the glass, holding a 54-28 rebounding advantage and securing 23 offensive boards. The Knights were up just 18-17 at the 10:39 mark of the first half but moved ahead 37-25 at intermission and the lead was never less than 11 in the second half.

Guard Laura Porter topped the Dutch charts with 16 points. Center Ashley Nekola, in just her second appearance since returning from a semester of study in Europe, cracked double figures for the first time this season with 10 points and four rebounds off the bench in 18 minutes action.

Wartburg got 16 points and 10 rebounds from Sharese Van Sloten.

First-year coach Natalie Nakic and the Dutch are back in Pella Saturday, facing Loras College in a women’s-men’s league doubleheader at P.H. Kuyper Gym. Game time is 4 p.m. The contests will be broadcast on KRLS-FM (92.1) and can also be heard at www.kniakrls.com with Jamie Brockman handling the call.
