Worcester Polytech 60, MIT 58

Worcester, MA — Antoine Coleman (Everett, MA) registered a career-best 30 points, including five three-pointers, as host WPI defeated MIT 60-58 in NEWMAC men’s basketball action Tuesday evening. The result places both teams at 2-1 in conference play and part of a four-way tie for first place with Clark and Wheaton.

Coleman was nearly unstoppable, connecting on 11-of-17 field goal attempts to go along with a team-high 6 rebounds. His five three-pointers were more than his season total of four over the first 11 contests of the season.

WPI (11-1) used a 17-6 run towards the end of the first half to build a 10-point lead, but saw MIT score four points in the final second of the half, and six of the first eight points of the second stanza to seize the lead. WPI took the lead for good on a James Marois (Worcester, MA) three-pointer with 15:44 remaining. Coleman and Ryan Cain (Webster, MA) were the difference down the stretch netting 10 of the final 11 WPI points. Cain ended the game with 13 points, while Marois chipped in with eight.

MIT (9-3) was paced offensively by reigning NEWMAC Player of the Week Mike D’Auria (Newton, MA), who collected 15 points and dished out 5 assists. Jimmy Bartolotta (Littleton, CO) added 11 points and Alex Krull (Boxford, MA) contributed 9 points and a game-high 8 rebounds.

Both squads will host non-conference contests on Thursday as WPI entertains Fitchburg State and MIT takes on Rhode Island College.
