Northwestern College is now 12-0 all-time against Presentation and 7-0 in the Ericksen Center against the Saints. Spanning back to last season, Northwestern has now prevailed in 15 of their last 16 Upper Midwest Athletic Conference contests and been triumphant in 9 straight league affairs at home.
Midway through the first half, both teams remained deadlocked at 12-to-12, as neither team found their shooting touch in the early stages of the game. Northwestern slowly built a 22-15 lead late in the half, but Presentation cut their deficit down to 4 points at the halftime break, trailing 24-20. The Eagles shot just 36.8% (7-of-19) from the field in the first twenty minutes of play, but boasted a 19-11 advantage on the boards, which resulted in 8 second-chance points. Presentation made just 8-of-27 (29.6%) from the floor and only 2-of-14 (14.3%) from three-point range in the half.
With the score tied at 26-26 early in the second half, Presentation strung together an 11-4 run over the next 8 minutes to go a head 37-30 with 9:37 remaining in the match-up. The Saints continued to own the upper-hand, protecting a 7-point advantage for 3 more minutes. With just over 6 minutes remaining on the clock, Northwestern began to take back the momentum, slowly chipping away with junior forward Hannah McEvoy (Wausau, Wis./Wausau West HS) taking over from the post position. McEvoy scored 7 straight points for the Eagles as they regained the lead 46-45 with 1:13 remaining in the game.
In the final minute, Northwestern added four free throws and Hannah McEvoy stole the ball and put in her fast-break lay-up attempt to seal the victory for the Eagles. Presentation’s final three-point attempt, which would have tied the game, would not go down as the final buzzer rang out.
The Eagles survived despite turning the ball over 17 times and shooting a poor 34.1% (14-of-41) from the floor. Northwestern did sink 20-of-25 (80.0%) from the free throw line. Presentation finished the night connecting on 18-of-56 (32.1%) from the field and just 4-of-29 (13.8%) from three-point range.
Hannah McEvoy finished with 13 points to pace Northwestern. Julie Ross (New Hope, Minn./Cooper HS) added 11 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 assists in a solid all-around performance, while sophomore guard Katie Tuseth (White Bear Lake, Minn.) came off the bench to spark the Eagles with 9 points on 3-of-4 shooting. For Presentation College, Bobbie Jo Bishop (Redwood Falls, Minn.) posted a team-high 16 points, also owning 5 rebounds. Amy Schilling (Wessington, S.D.) joined her in double-figures with 11 points and 5 boards.
Northwestern College will return to the court for the second time in as many days, hosting the University of Minnesota-Morris at 3 p.m. on Saturday, January 14th. Presentation College will make the short trip to St. Bonifacius, Minnesota, and meet up with Crown College, also on Saturday, January 14th, at 3 p.m.
