Luther 76, Cornell 55

MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — Cornell (4-11 overall, 2-4 Iowa Conference) saw a halftime lead disappear during a 76-55 loss to Luther (13-3, 6-2) on Jan. 21 in Mount Vernon.

The Rams led 31-30 at the break, but were outscored 46-24 during the final 20 minutes.

Cornell junior Anna Skaggs scored a game-high 24 points and added a team-high six rebounds. She made 9 of 19 field goals and 5 of 7 free throws. Freshman Brianna Wallace scored 11 points with three assists and three steals.

Luther’s depth and balance paid dividends in the end. The Norse had four players in double figures — Anne Straate with 15 points and a game-high nine rebounds, Christina Gaard (13 points) and Melissa O’Brien and Ashley TeKippe with 10 points apiece. Luther handed out 20 assists — five each by Gaard and O’Brien and four by Kylie Bestul. Danielle Dunnwald had four steals.

Luther shot 61.3 percent form the field in the second half (19 of 31), with Gaard scoring 13 points with four assists.
