Babson 60, Worcester Polytech 42

BABSON PARK, Mass. — Junior forward April Suprey (South Boston, Mass.) scored 13 of game-high 17 points in the second half to lead the Babson College women’s basketball team to a 60-42 victory over visiting WPI in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Tuesday night. The win snapped a three-game slide for the Beavers (10-5 overall, 4-2 NEWMAC), while WPI (10-7 overall, 4-2 NEWMAC) saw its four-game win streak come to a halt.

WPI held a 9-5 advantage after six minutes of play, but Suprey hit back-to-back jumpers to spark a 10- run that gave Babson a 14-9 lead. The Beavers would eventually lead by as many as 10 before taking a 23-14 edge into the locker room.

Babson never relinquished the lead in the second half, although WPI got as close as six at 37-31 on a conventional three-point play by junior Meghan Pajonas (Bristol, Conn.) with 9:18 remaining. However, Suprey answered with a three-point play of her own seconds later, pushing the Beavers’ advantage back to double-digits. The Engineers would eventually cut their deficit back to seven at 42-35 with 5:41 left to play, but sophomore Nicole Cassinis (East Hanover, N.J.) hit two consecutive jumpers in the lane to give Babson an 11-point cushion. WPI would not threaten the rest of the way, as the home team claimed the 60-42 victory.

Suprey shot 6-for-8 from the field and 5-for-5 for her 17 points, while Cassinis finished with nine points and four steals off the bench. Junior Suzy Ward (North Attleboro, Mass.) chipped in with eight points, eight rebounds, and two blocked shots, and junior captain Colleen Burke (Pittsfield, Mass.) dished out a game-high five assists.

WPI was led by Pajonas, who enjoyed a solid all-around game with 16 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Senior Ashley Zalucky (Troy, N.Y.) added nine points, but no other Engineer would score more than four as the visitors were held to just 32.7 percent (16-for-49) shooting from the field.
