Tracy Hartwig started the game with a 3-point shot, sparking a 12-2 run and a lead that Buena Vista never relinquished. Sinking seven shots from long-range in the first half alone, the Beavers left the court with a 48-30 halftime lead.
Buena Vista came back on the court in much the same manner as it left it, with precision shooting and intense defense. With six minutes left in the game, the Beavers had run up a 29-point lead against the Kohawks. Coach Janet Berry pulled her starting squad off the court and was able to use the entire bench for the last few minutes.
Katie Maguire led a triplet of Beavers scoring in double digits, racking up 24 points which included five 3-point shots and 5 of 5 from the charity stripe. She also added six assists and three steals.
Jess Griggs was next in line with 21 points. Hartwig registered 18 points and a team-high nine rebounds. Maguire wasn’t the only one with a hot hand behind the arc, as Griggs sank three and Hartwig drained four 3-point shots apiece.
The Kohawks were led by Amber Karkosh who had 18 points and Erica Langland and Elizabeth Reedy who had eight points each. Coe, which fell to 5-11 and 3-4 in the IIAC, shot 24 of 62 (39%) from the floor.
Buena Vista is now 11-5 overall and 6-1 in conference play. The Beavers' next opponent is Simpson College. Tip-off is slated for 6 pm this Friday, January 27 at Siebens Fieldhouse.
