Buena Vista, which lost in overtime the night before, started the game sluggish, taking nearly 7 minutes to score its first points of the game. A 3-pointer by Jess Griggs created momentum for the Beavers as they went on an 8-0 run over the Rams in the 10th minute of the game. The scoring went back and forth throughout the rest of the half, but both teams battled hard as they went into halftime tied 40-40.
Trailing 70-69 with just over four minutes to play, Buena Vista went on an 11-4 run to close out the game and seal the victory. The Beavers benefited from excellent free throw shooting, as they hit 20 of 22 (91%) of their attempts from the charity stripe.
Katie Maguire led the Beavers with 29 points, as she was 5 for 5 from beyond the 3-point arc. She also dished out nine assists and pulled down five boards.
Kelli Staley, back in action after missing multiple games this month, made her presence known as she powered up 16 points. Jess Griggs was also sinking the shots as she followed close behind with 15.
Tracy Hartwig was next in line, scoring 12 points. She was also the second highest rebounder with six, behind Melissa Putney who had seven. Buena Vista out-rebounded Cornell 38-28.
The Rams were led by Tiffany Cowan who had 15 points and Katie Morris and Anna Skaggs who had 14 points each. Cornell, which fell to 3-6 in the IIAC and 5-13 overall, shot 27 of 63 (42.9%) from the floor.
Buena Vista is now 12-6 overall and 7-2 in conference play. The Beavers' next opponent is Central College in Pella. Tip off is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday February 1.
