Hamline 69, St. Thomas 66

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Laurisa Ewert had 20 points and 14 rebounds, including the go-ahead basket with 1:12 to play, to lead the visiting Hamline Pipers to a 69-66 victory over St. Thomas in MIAC women's basketball play Saturday.

Hamline (8-9, 5-8) had lost 38 in a row to St. Thomas (9-8, 6-6) before winning at home Dec. 5. It's the Pipers first sweep of St. Thomas in 20 seasons.

Hamline's Britta Schwartzhoff scored 16 points, including 4-of-4 from 3-point range.

The Pipers, who sank 15-of-16 free throws, outscored UST 31-16 over the final 13:50, and 4-0 in the final 4:00. After Ewert's basket put Hamline ahead 67-66, Schwartzhoff made two free throws with 41 seconds left to push the lead to 69-66.

The Tommies missed three 3-point shots in the closing seconds.

Senior Erica Opdahl had 20 points and freshman Chelsea Wirtz had 16 points and six assists for the Tommies.

St. Thomas hosts Gustavus Monday (5:45 p.m.).
