Mary Wash hits two numbers in one night

Junior forward Jon Pierce netted a pair of free throws with four seconds remaining and then blocked the final shot at the buzzer to lead the Mary Washington men's basketball team to a 57-56 win over Salisbury on Tuesday night at goolrick Gymnasium in Capital Athletic Conference action.

The Eagles improve to 13-7 overall and 7-5 in CAC play, while the Sea Gulls fall to 11-10 and 6-6. Prior to the end of game heroics by Pierce, UMW saw two milestones eclipsed in the game, as senior guard Mike Lee became just the third player in school history to surpass 1,500 career points, and senior guard Justin Baker became the 14th player in school history to surpass 1,000 career points.

UMW trailed throughout the first half, and took its first lead of the game at 35-34 with 13:30 remaining with a layup by Kevin Kitching. After a Kitching steal, Pierce buried a three pointer to give the Eagles a 38-34 lead with 13:07 left. Salisbury regained the lead with 9:14 left on a Ray Williams three pointer, and the Sea Gulls would hold all the way to the final four seconds.

With 1:03 remaining and the Eagles trailing, 56-53, Baker stole the ball and scored a layup to cut the deficit to one. A turnover by the Sea Gulls with 48 seconds remaining gave UMW the chance to regain the lead, and Pierce's two free throws were the deciding points. The Sea Gulls entered play at the UMW free throw line, and Segun Odumeu found Ray Williams for a look at a possible winning shot, but Pierce blocked the shot away as the buzzer sounded.
