Muhlenberg Sweeps Hopkins for Centennial Titles
Muhlenberg pulled off an unprecedented double Feb. 28, capturing both the men's and women's basketball championships, defeating Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. The men edged the Blue Jays, 55-53, while the women upset the heavily favored home team 71-61. In the men's game, Jim Doumato scored 13 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, as Muhlenberg (17-9) went on the road and defeated Johns Hopkins, 55-53, to capture the Centennial men's championship. Kamau Coar led the Blue Jays (20-6) with 17. On the women's side, Jill Roth set a conference championship game record with 27 points to lead Muhlenberg (17-9) to a 71-61 upset of heavily favored Johns Hopkins (22-4) in Baltimore to win the Centennial women's championship. The Mules defended their 1997 title and became the first road team to win the women's final. Sarah Clarke added 22 for the victors, who connected on 32 of 37 attempts from the line. Hopkins, which connected on just 16 of 27 from the charity stripe, was led by Angie Arnold's 14 points.

Wabash Wins Second Consecutive ICAC Men's Title
CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -- Wabash (21-4) captured its second consecutive Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference championship with an 83-75 win against Franklin College (22-5) Feb. 28 at Chadwick Court. The Little Giants, which will be appearing in the NCAA Tournament for the fifth time under head coach Mac Petty, were led by junior forward Chad Tabor's career-high 34 points. Tabor, the ICAC's Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive season, made 11-of-19 field goals and 11-of-15 free throws in the contest. Sophomore guard Josh Estelle added 21 points and senior center Eric Jaryszak had nine points and seven rebounds for the Little Giants. Franklin was led by junior guard Jason Sibley's 22 points and eight caroms.

Catholic Men Sweep CAC, Win 19th Straight
WASHINGTON -- Catholic University won for the 19th consecutive time and claimed their second Capital Athletic Conference championship, edging Goucher 74-73. The Cardinals (24-3) came into the game ranked No. 1 in the Middle Atlantic region, Goucher (20-7) was ranked No. 5. Catholic led by as many as 13 points before the Gophers used an 11-3 run to get back in the game, but the Cardinals scored their final 16 points from the foul line to wrap up the win. Freshman point guard Pat Maloney led Catholic for the second consecutive game with 21 points, while Bakari Ward led all scorers with 24 points, including a three at the buzzer to make the final margin one point.

Gustavus Adolphus Men Top St. Thomas in MIAC
ST. PETER, Minn. -- The Gustavus men's basketball team earned its third consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament with a 66-62 win against St. Thomas. Junior guard Mark McDonnell hit two free throws with 15 seconds left to give the Gusties a 65-62 lead. A three-point attempt by St. Thomas junior guard Matt Arnold with :05 seconds remaining did not fall and Gustavus closed out the scoring when senior guard Aaron Grove hit one-of-two free throws with :01 second remaining. Gustavus improves to 23-3 on the year, while St. Thomas finishes its season at 18-8. Bob Southworth scored 20 points for Gustavus to lead all scorers. Other Gusties in double figures in cluded Luke Schmidt with 14 and Mark McDonnell with 12. St. Thomas was led by Tom Fritz with 17 followed by Kip Sparby with 14.

Christopher Newport Sweeps Dixie Titles
Christopher Newport Men 77, Greensboro 60 - The Captains led 34-28 at the half and then scored pulled away, scoring the first 16 points of the second half. Matt Bryant led with 16 points, David Powell had 13 and Steve Butler had 11. Lee Tucker paced the Pride with 15 and Ted Wewer had 10. Bryant was the MVP and also on the All-tournament team were Butler, Tucker, Michael Hunter of Ferrum and Marquis McDougald of N.C. Wesleyan. In the women's title game, Christopher Newport beat Methodist 93-91 in overtime. Serita Jackson scored six points in the last 2:17 to lift CNU to the win. Misty Hart led the way with 28 while Tamara Pool had 15, Jackson 12, and Rasheka Barnes had 11 points with 15 rebounds. Methodist's Jennifer Snead scored 30 points and had 13 rebounds, Triba Williams had 18 points, Veronica Sebolt 17 with 13 rebounds and Sissy Sink scored 13. Hart was named MVP and was joined on the All-Tournament team by Barnes, Snead, Sink and Deanna Estes of Shenandoah.

Hunter Claims Both CUNYAC Championships
Hunter College earned a sweep of both the men's and women's CUNY Athletic Conference Championships held at York College Feb. 27. The Hunter men won their fifth CUNY Athletic Conference Championship in the last seven years and secured an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament with a 76-55 win over host York. Junior Braheen Cotton, the CUNYAC regular season Most Valuable Player, earned tournament Most Valuable Player honors after a 22 point, 9 rebound performance. York (15-12) had handed the Hawks their only loss of the season on the same court in early December. Hunter (26-1, No. 1 Atlantic, No. 7 NABC) extended its school-record winning streak to 24 games and tied the school's single-season record for victories with 26. The Hunter women rallied from a 13-point deficit to defeat favored College of Staten Island 63-52 for its first conference title since 1993. Like Cotton, senior Suzette Henry was selected as both regular season and conference tourney Most Valuable Player after scoring 23 points and pulling down 9 boards in the championship game. Staten Island (23-4) had defeated Hunter (18-9) in both regular-season meetings. Unlike the men, the CUNYAC women do not receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Anderson Sets Record, Advances to ICAC Semis
ANDERSON, Ind. -- The Anderson University Ravens set a school record with their 86-75 win over Franklin College in the opening round of the ICAC women's basketball tournament. The victory put the Ravens at 14-11 on the season to set the school's single-season record for wins. The Ravens eclipsed the 13-11 record earned by the 1981-82 Anderson squad. The 1981-82 season was also the last winning season for Anderson. The Grizzlies (6-19) tied the game in the second half with 7:52 remaining at 66-66, but Anderson closed the game with a 20-9 run to put Franklin away. Sophomore Amie Flowers scored 10 of the Ravens’ 20 points in that stretch to lead Anderson to the ICAC semifinals for the second consecutive season. Flowers led the Ravens with 23 points, while junior point guard DeAnn Edge added 17 points, nine assists and six rebounds for the Ravens. Anderson will face No. 1-seeded DePauw tomorrow night at DePauw in the tournament semifinals.

One, Wisconsin
Wisconsin-Platteville and Wisconsin-Oshkosh shared the limelight Feb. 25 as both of the nation's new No. 1 teams were in action. On the men's side, Platteville, who earned the No. 1 ranking in the NABC poll earlier in the day, won at Oshkosh 65-57 to remain undefeated at 24-0. Oshkosh, ranked third in the West Region and No. 18 in the NABC, fell to 20-4 overall. Over in Platteville, the WBCA's newly elected top team from Oshkosh beat the Pioneers 67-36. The Titans improved to 23-1 overall. Both the Platteville men and Oshkosh women have clinched Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles with 15-0 records and automatic bids to the NCAA III playoffs.

It's Oh-Oh in the OAC
The Ohio Athletic Conference is in its semifinals and the top remaining seed is No. 5 Otterbein. Top-seeded John Carroll and No. 2 Ohio Northern hit the dust tonight, as did No. 3 Mount Union. So who's left? Just No. 5 Otterbein, No. 6 Baldwin-Wallace, No. 7 Capital and No. 8 Marietta. Also, some conference finalists: Goucher at Catholic (men's Capital), York vs. Hunter (men's CUNYAC), Hunter vs. Staten Island (women's CUNYAC) and Muhlenberg at Johns Hopkins (men's and women's Centennial).

Ill. Wesleyan Knocks off No. 2 Chicago
Illinois Wesleyan has lost only once on its home court since it opened, and they kept that streak alive, dropping No. 2 University of Chicago 88-76. The Titans opened the second half on a 10-3 run to open up a 50-35 lead en route to the win. Forward Matt Hoder (pictured) scored 17 points for the Titans on 8-for-10 shooting, while teammate Brent Niebrugge led all scorers with 22 points. Chicago is No. 2 in the latest NABC Top 20, while Illinois Wesleyan is No. 13. The two teams are ranked 1-2 in the Midwest Region.

PAC in Three-Way Tie, Playoffs Loom
After Washington and Jefferson defeated the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets 73-62 in Washington, Pa., the Presidents' Athletic Conference had a three-way tie for first place. Waynesburg, Thiel and W&J are each 6-3 in the conference. PAC teams have had trouble beating each other on the road this season, as each of these teams have traded victories. After Saturday, Feb. 21, the PAC may still have the same situation as the top three schools play home games. PAC officials have yet to announce a playoff site or any further details, reports the Greene County (Pa.) Messenger.

Clement Sets Single-Game Scoring Record
Grinnell guard Jeff Clement set the D-III scoring record with 77 points Feb. 18 in Grinnell's 149-144 win against Illinois College. Clement shot 26-for-68 from the floor and 19-for-52 from 3-point range, breaking his own record of 17 3-pointers in a game set earlier this season. The previous record was 69 points by Steve Diekmann, also of Grinnell, in 1994. Last Saturday, Grinnell had broken the record for most players making a 3-pointer when 13 players hit from downtown in a 104-73 win against Monmouth. The Pioneers broke the previous record, 11, set by St. Mary's (Md.) against Bard in 1994.

Brooklyn College Rookie Breaks Steals Record
BROOKLYN, N.Y. — With eight steals Feb. 17 in a 92-76 men's basketball victory against Pratt Institute, Brooklyn freshman Elijah Jefferson broke the school's season steals record. The old record of 106 was set by former BC star Glen Earl James during the 1984-85 season. Jefferson, a 5-10 point guard, now has 114 steals this season going into Monday night's season finale against Yeshiva. Jefferson also scored 20 points and added 8 assists as well.

Will Marshall Tops 46-year-old Scoring Record
Western Maryland senior forward Will Marshall became the school's all-time leading scorer on a jumper with 15:21 remaining in the second half of a 71-66 Centennial Conference loss to Gettysburg. The basket gave Marshall 1,565 points, surpassing the 1,564 compiled by Art Press from 1949 through 1952. Marshall topped all scorers with 24 points, raising his record total to 1,577. Western Maryland fell to 11-10, while Gettysburg improved to 13-9.

Webster Men Set SLIAC Mark for Best Turnaround
The Webster University men's basketball team etched its name into the record books of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference this afternoon with its 68-61 win against MacMurray. With the win, the Gorloks (13-9, 9-3) sets the conference's mark for biggest turnaround in one season. The Gorloks have improved their conference record by eight wins so far, coming off a 1-13 season in 1996-97. The Gorloks held an 11-point lead at halftime before MacMurray rallied to within 64-61 with one minute left. Free-throws by Adam Tigert and Paul Zellmer clinched the game for Webster.

Christopher Newport Sweeps, Men 21-1
The No. 6 Christopher Newport men ran their winning streak to 21 and clinched the Dixie Conference regular season championship with an 86-78 win, while the women won their seventh consecutive game to solidify their hold on first place in the Dixie. In the men’s game the Captains (21-1, 10-0) led by as many as 16 in the second half. Senior Sean Phillips had the game of his career with a career-high 26 points and 12 rebounds, while senior Steve Butler added 16 points and a CNU career-high 22 rebounds. Averett (8-13, 5-5) was led by Demarcus Morrison with 21 points. The CNU women also coasted to an 83-63 win. Freshman Serita Jackson had a career-high 27 points to pace CNU, which improved to 18-3 and 9-1. Junior Tamara Pool added 20 points. Averett (8-12, 4-6) got 20 points from Shannon Yopp.

Miller's 47 Lifts Gallaudet in Atlantic Battle
WASHINGTON — Gallaudet's Ronda Jo Miller set a school record with 47 points as the Bison, ranked No. 5 in the women's Atlantic region, defeated No. 8 Mary Washington 104-96. Miller shot 17-for-27 from the floor and tied the school record with seven blocked shots. Mary Washington's Andrea Sellers led the Eagles with 34 points. Miller, leading the nation with 27.7 points per game, also broke her own school record with 574 career points. Mary Washington dropped into a four-way tie atop the CAC with Gallaudet, Salisbury State and St. Mary's.

Haley Becomes Western Maryland's Career Best
WESTMINSTER, Md. — Senior forward Katie Haley became Western Maryland's career scoring leader on a short jumper with 3:41 left in the second half which gave her 1,579 points, surpassing the 1,577 compiled by Cindy Boyer from 1984 to 1987. Haley finished the game with her second consecutive 27-point effort, also a season high, which lifted her career total to 1,584. Junior forward Kathi Snyder added a season-high 25 points for the Green Terror, which lost to Elizabethtown 86-84 in overtime.

Anderson Men Snap Long ICAC Skid
ANDERSON, Ind. — Sophomore Chaz Smoot drained a jumper from the free throw line with one second remaining to give his Anderson University Ravens a 72-71 come-from-behind victory against the Spartans of Manchester College Feb. 11. The victory is the first Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference regular season win in 21 games for the Ravens, dating back to a 79-74 victory against Franklin on Feb. 10, 1996. Anderson came back from a 12-point (44-32) halftime deficit to gain the victory. The Ravens (9-12, 1-8) took their first lead of the game at 70-69 on a free throw by sophomore Michael Wingert with 1:34 remaining in the contest. The Spartans (14-7, 5-4) regained a one-point lead with two free throws from freshman Jeremy Neely for a 71-70 lead. Noel Nitecki led the victors with a team-high 14 points and six assists.

ONU Men Retain Share of OAC Lead
ADA, Ohio — Jeremy Thompson’s 27 points lifted No. 19 Ohio Northern over Mount Union 80-71 in front of 1,687 fans Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center. ONU had three players in double figures, with Mike Kluse scoring 18 and Scott Unverferth adding 17 points. Unverferth also lead the team in rebounds with 10. Mount Union (14-6, 10-4) was lead by Aaron Shipp who dumped in 29 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. ONU (16-4, 11-3) went on a 7-0 run to take a 53-45 lead with 14:22 left in the contest. The Purple Raiders got within 55-53 with 9:26 remaining, but could never retake the lead. ONU took its largest lead of the game with :08 to play 80-71. Mount Union took its largest lead at 20-14 with 10:14 remaining in the opening stanza before the Polar Bears fought back to take a 43-41 lead at the half after an Unverferth tip-in with :57 remaining. In the second half, ONU went on a 7-0 run to take a 53-45 lead with 14:22 left. The Purple Raiders got within 55-53 with 9:26 remaining, but could never retake the lead. ONU took its largest lead of the game with :08 to play 80-71.

Kalamazoo Ends No. 2 Hope's Winning Streak
Kalamazoo College's men ended three streaks with a 70-57 victory at Hope College on Saturday. The Hornets ended their four-game losing streak, their five-game losing streak against Hope and Hope's 19-game winning streak. Dave Dobbie lead Kalamazoo (8-12, 3-6 MIAA) with 14 points, while Brad Phillips and Brian Ellison each added 13. Kalamazoo held Hope to 25% shooting from the field and its lowest point total of the season. The Flying Dutch (19-2, 8-1) were tied for No. 2 in Division III entering the game. Saturday's win marked the second time in the past three seasons that the Hornets ended a long Hope win streak. Kalamazoo posted a 67-65 win in February 1996 to end a 23-game Hope winning streak.

No. 22 Wabash Tops No. 12 Franklin, Leads ICAC
Crawfordsville, Ind. -- Wabash left no doubt as to whether it belongs in sole possession of first place in the Indiana Collegiate Athletic Conference after dismantling Franklin College, 93-74, before an overflow crowd of 2,225 at Chadwick Court Feb. 7. The Little Giants (17-3, 8-1 ICAC) were led in scoring by sophomore guard Josh Estelle's 33 points, while junior All-America forward Chad Tabor added a season-high 27 points. Franklin (17-3, 7-2) was paced in the scoring column by junior guard Jason Sibley's career-best 27 points. The game matched two of the top teams in the Midwest Region, as Franklin was second and Wabash was tied for third in last week's regional poll.

No. 18 Catholic Extends Win Streak to 12 Games
Washington, D.C. -- Catholic University's men improved to 17-3 and extended their winning streak to 12 games, defeating Marymount 95-64. The Cardinals, who remained a game ahead of Goucher at 10-0 in the CAC, scored the first 10 points of the game and never looked back, leading by as many as 35 points in the second half. Junior guard Jim McNiff scored a game-high 29 points for Catholic, shooting 7-for-10 from three-point range. Marymount (9-11, 6-4 CAC) lost for only the third time in nine games.

Roanoke Men Upset No. 16 Hampden-Sydney
SALEM, Va.-- Roanoke centers Ramsey Hathaway and Alex Phillips led the Maroons to an upset victory over No. 18 Hampden-Sydney 79-62. A sophomore, Hathaway notched his first career double-double with 15 points and a game-high 15 rebounds, while Phillips, a sophomore, netted a game-high 17 points. The Tigers, ranked No. 2 in the South Region, started off strong, taking a 7-2 lead, before the Maroons muscled their way back into the game. A basket by sophomore center Jeremy Harris with 2:21 left in the first half gave Hampden-Sydney its final lead of the game, 28-26. Tigers' sophomore guard T.J. Grimes was the only Hampden-Sydney player in double figures with 14 points. The Maroons improve to 10-9 on the season, 7-6 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference, while the Tigers fall to 17-4, 11-4 in the ODAC.

Montague Reaches Wooster All-Time Mark
Katie Montague became Wooster's all-time leading scorer Saturday with 1,206 points, scoring 20 points in a 59-58 loss to Wittenberg. The junior forward passed Lisa Diment's mark of 1,202. Montague, who shot 6-for-13 from the floor and 7-for-7 from the line, currently leads the North Coast Athletic Conference in scoring with an average of 22 points per game. The win gave Wittenberg a split in the season series with Wooster.

Moravian's Jason Moran Scores 1,000th Point
Moravian junior Jason Moran scored all 26 of his points in the second half Feb. 4 to pass the 1,000 point mark. Moran, 11th in rebounds and 14th in blocked shots in Division III, needed 25 points against Albright to reach the milestone.

Schweizer Wash U's All-Time Leading Scorer
Washington University guard Amy Schweizer scored a team-high 15 points and her final tally made the senior the Bears' all-time leading scorer in a 95-51 non-conference victory against MacMurray at the WU Field House. Schweizer, who scored two points in the first half, added 13 in the second stanza including the record-setting three-pointer from the top of the key with 9:38 remaining in the game. Schweizer has 1,361 career points, passing WU Hall of Famer Karen Hermann, who scored 1,360 points from 1987-91. "I am happy to set the record at home and have my name mentioned with some of the greatest players in Washington U. history," said Schweizer. "It is a great honor. More importantly, we won the game and continue our push for a run at the postseason."

Hunter Men Win School-Record 16th in a Row
Mike Rencher converted all eight of his shots from the field and scored 18 points to lead a balanced scoring attack and help visiting Hunter to a runaway 85-46 non-conference victory against Ramapo. Hunter won a school-record 16th consecutive game, breaking the previous mark of 15 set on three occasions, the last coming during the 1993-94 season. Forward Braheen Cotton added 15 points and guards Stanley O'Neil and George Brown added 14 and 12, respectively. Hunter, ranked No. 2 in the Atlantic Region and No. 13 in the NABC poll, improved to 18-1 on the season.
