MIT, which returns four starters from a team which went 29-2 and reached the Final Four in 2012, is the preseason No. 1 team in the D3hoops.com men's basketball Top 25.

The Engineers got 12 of the 25 first-place votes. Second-ranked Virginia Wesleyan got three, while No. 3 UW-Whitewater received 10. Whitewater, the defending national champion, also returns four starters but the fifth starter was Chris Davis, the 2012 D3hoops.com Player of the Year.

The women's D3hoops.com Top 25 should be released next week.

Nine teams are in the preseason Top 25 who were not in last year's final poll. The highest ranked of the bunch is No. 11 St. Thomas, which technically returns six starters. One of them is center Tommy Hannon, who started on the 2011 national title team but played just nine games in 2012 before getting injured and missing the rest of the season.

Two NESCAC teams (Middlebury, Amherst) and two CCIW teams (North Central, Illinois Wesleyan) are in the top 10. The ODAC and NESCAC each have three teams in the Top 25.
