Head Coach Todd Wright guided his Maryville College team to a 19-9 record last season, his first with the orange and garnet. Following a 12-0 run through the Great South Athletic Conference to claim the regular season title, a pair of wins in the GSAC Tournament earned MC their sixth conference title. The title earned MC their 16th trip to the NCAA Division III post-season tournament, their first since 2006.
With the loss of All-American Natalie Munday and a pair of starting guards, the 2009-10 Scots will quickly rely on an outstanding recruiting class and the experience of six returning contributors. This incoming class will join returning starters point guard Alicia Brown (30 min/gm, 6.7 ppg, 3.1 rbg, 107 assists) and forward Rachel Draper (4 ppg, 3 rbg). Tara Heyboer (8.2 ppg, 5.5 rbg, 55% fg) was a strong force off the bench for MC while earning GSAC All-Freshman honors. The Scots will also return 2007-08 All-GSAC post player Alison Harmon, who missed last season with an injury after averaging 10 points and 5 rebounds a game while shooting over 50% from the field. Additional returning standouts include 2007-08 GSAC Freshman of the Year Alexis Rouvelas, who averaged 5.9 points a game while shooting 54% from the field and Ashley Holder, an athletic post player, who finished last season averaging 5 points and 3 rebounds a game for Maryville. Alex Walker, back after injury, and Jessica Herrell look to make an impact and provide leadership this season.
This overall experienced group will look to replace over 50% of the 2008-09 offensive output of Munday, Jeanna Dalton, and Colleen McConnell. Nine outstanding freshmen and a pair of transfers will add to the team competitiveness and depth this season. Paige Sevier, who played for Coach Wright at Roane State and freshman Lailah Farmer have been a pair of newcomers who have stepped up early and will challenge opponents daily. CJ Dake, a sophomore transfer from Birmingham Southern, and Janell Menard, a freshman from Loudon also should be contributors to the Scots’ success.
The Scots began last season 2-4 before finishing with a 14-game winning streak heading into the NCAA Tournament. Coach Wright will challenge his squad once again with a very competitive list of opponents. A strong schedule featuring NCAA Division III tournament teams Oglethorpe and Greensboro, NAIA tournament qualifier Berry College, and NCAA Division II rival Carson Newman, will allow Coach Wright and his staff to push their program toward regional and national prominence while preparing his Scots for another league title and post season appearance.
“Once our newcomers become adjusted to the college game and learn from our returners, I believe our offensive efficiency will be exciting to watch,” stated Coach Wright. “We will be competitive, deep, and fun to watch this season.”
