CCNY
Second-year head coach Derrick Harrison has revived a CCNY program who only two years ago needed resuscitation.  In his first season (1999-2000), CCNY finished with an overall record of 13-13, and a 10-5 record in the CUNYAC conference. This season the Lady Beavers our primed and ready to compete for the CUNYAC title, and an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.

Leading the way for CCNY is sophomore Lauren Cargill. As a freshman Cargill was named CUNYAC Player of the Year. The 5-9 guard averaged 23.4 points per game (2nd in the nation). Joining Cargill in the backcourt will be Victoria Rautilia. Rautilia is a 5-2 freshman guard from Sweden.

"Victoria is a very smart player, and will be a great addition to our backcourt" said Harrison.

One of the fastest players on the CCNY squad is freshman guard Hazel Alvarado. Alvarado is a two sport athlete at City College, where she also plays women's soccer. A graduate of Bayside High School in Queens, Hazel led the PSAL in steals last season.

Coach Harrison is very excited about his frontcourt this season. Freshman Clarice Bell will provide City with the inside scoring threat they lacked last season. Bell is a 6-3 center who led Long Island City High School in rebounds, and blocked shots last season. Rahmat Balogun a 5-10 power forward returns this season to provide depth at the forward position.

The CCNY women begin their season with the Pepsi Cardinal Tournament at Plattsburgh University Nov. 17-18.

Hunter
Eighth-year head coach Jackee Meadow and her Hunter College women's basketball team enter the 2000-01 season coming off a recent roll of unprecedented success. In the last three years, the Hawks have won two CUNYAC Tournament championships, back-to-back CUNYAC regular season titles, made the first appearance in the NCAA Division III Championships in school history, and created further postseason waves by participating in the ECAC Tournament.

This onslaught of success has firmly entrenched the Hawks in the ranks of teams to be reckoned with by local and regional opposition. Regaining the conference title and returning to the national spotlight will serve as a tremendous driving force for the team this season.

Pointing the way as the team pursues these aims is senior forward Maria Kalogiannis, the leader on the defensive end of the floor. An experienced fourth-year veteran, the team captain provides unmatched leadership and intensity.

Another returning fourth-year player is senior guard April Williams. Entering her second season as a captain, she will be looked to for consistency and all-around hustle.

Junior forward Shevon Collins has a history of stepping up in big games and was named to the CUNYAC All-Tournament team last year. Frontcourt classmate Shanell Sapp came on in a major way over the course of last season and was a strong contributor down the stretch.

Senior forward Melinda Gardner is expected to excel in the final season of her career. The backcourt will bring back sophomore captain Vana Loukissas and classmates Jen Rogers and Jezel Rodriguez, who combine to form a multitalented trio upon which the team can rely all season.

Juniors Melodie Abrook and Stephanie Rodriguez round out the returning players from last season and will figure prominently in the frontcourt and backcourt, respectively. Back at Hunter after a hiatus is sophomore center Indira Ceville, whose past experience on the team should prove to be a valuable asset.

Sophomore guard Kamille Scarlett has the ability to make an instant impact. The freshman quartet of Jen Agosto, Joy Blackwell, Tara Goins, and Leza Tazama will also be counted on to blossom immediately and fill the squad's remaining needs.

As always, the team will be tested early and often against a rigorous schedule featuring a wide array of tenacious local and regional opponents. The 2000-01 edition of the Hunter College Hawks must be ready to meet their challenges in order to fulfill the goals of another CUNYAC title and a return trip to postseason competition.

Lehman
Lehman has come along way in just three years. When coach Eric Harrison inherited this team three seasons ago, the program was mediocre at best, not ready to compete for championship glory. The team was comprised of seven players, and completed the season with just five active players. Now in just two seasons at the helm the Lightning have been selected as the preseason number one team in the City University of New York Conference. Expectations are high around the Bronx campus, as third-year coach Eric Harrison has assembled one of the finest teams in recent history at Lehman, and has completely turned around the women's basketball program at Lehman.

How does a team who only returns two players from last season garner such high expectations?  It all begins with the backcourt, and a fine talented group the Lightning possesses this season. Leading the way will be former Lehman nemesis Diana Olaya. Olaya, who starred at CUNY power Hunter College, transferred to Lehman this fall, and is expected to be a major contributor with her skill and championship experience. Olaya who ranked third in the nation in steals, will be a factor in the Lehman backcourt.

"It is exciting to have a player of Diana's caliber here, she brings energy and excitement every time she steps on the floor, and will be very instrumental in our goal of a championship." replies Coach Harrison.

Lehman will rely on two of the premiere shooters in the conference, in junior guards Ivelisse Rosario, and Desirae Ross. Rosario, a lefty sharp-shooter from the Bronx, has the ability to be one of the best shooters in Lehman history, a Hudson Valley Conference all-star last season, she brings stability to a team with a great deal of young players. Ross will be called upon to continue her strides at Lehman. In just two seasons, Ross has established herself as one of the best players in the conference, and has been awarded with a two-time CUNY all-star award, and was named Hudson Valley Conference Most Valuable Player last season. "The leadership that Ivelisse and Desirae bring to this team are unmeasurable, they bring a great amount of maturity to a very young ball club.

Lehman boasts some of the premiere newcomers to the conference, being led by 5-10 freshmen Chanel Kendall. Kendall, an explosive player from Brooklyn, has the opportunity to emerge as one of the best players to wear a Lehman uniform. After averaging 19 points per game at Franklin D. Roosevelt high school, Chanel will try to match those numbers on the college level.

Joining Chanel will be fellow freshmen Florena Rhodes. Rhodes, a 5-9 guard averaged 32 points per game, while starring at St. Michael's Academy and will be called upon to continue her torrid scoring pace here at Lehman. Shaneequa Ware, a former PSAL all-star, has also joined the Lightning this season, and will be an immediate impact here in the Bronx.

Giving immediate help in the Lightning frontcourt, will be 5-11 Allene Williams. Williams, a transfer from the University of Maryland, has the ability to become one of the most dominating players in the CUNY conference. "Allene's experience in Division I, and the ACC conference, will give us an immediate boost", says Coach Harrison. In the development of our program, we have taken the talent level to a new dimension.

Marymount
At the end of the 1999-2000 season, head coach Bill Finney thought his team was playing the best defense that any of the his former teams had ever played. That's saying a lot - since in the 17 seasons, Finney has coached at Marymount, he has had eight squads that have won 20 or more games. Add to that, a top-flight recruiting class and the goals for 2000-01 include recapturing the Capital Athletic Conference Championship.

Last year's team finished 15-11 and lost in overtime in the semifinals of the Capital Athletic Conference tournament. They graduated three players - but one of them will still return to the squad this season, having another year of eligibility and attending graduate school.

That returning graduate is point guard Rachel Taylor, a three-time all-conference player who averaged 10.2 points per game last season along with 4.2 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 2 steals per game. She enters the 00-01 season with 820 career points, 75 three-pointers, 355 assists and 192 steals - and an incredible amount of experience.

The Saints also return three other players who started at least 11 games last season. They include junior guard Candice Brown, senior guard Tameeka Lyles and sophomore forward Jodie Knotts. Brown led the team last season in scoring (11.5 points per game), was second in rebounding (6.1 per game), led the team in steals (3.4 per contest) and third in assists (1.8 per game). Lyles, who missed 6 games with a bad ankle finished last season with 8.9 points per game (4th on the team), 3.3 rebounds  and nearly 2 steals per game. Knotts, who started 15 games, had an outstanding end of season, including 29 points in the last game of the season. She finished her rookie season averaging 8.8 points, 4.3 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game.

In addition, the Saints return sophomore Ashlee Courter, who saw action in the first six games last year before succumbing to a knee injury that ended her freshman season. In those first six games she had averaged 8.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. She has worked hard all winter, spring and summer to rehabilitate her leg and is cleared to go this season. Also returning is junior Kristin McGrory, a guard who saw action in 25 games last season, averaging nearly 12 minutes per game and 1.7 points. Senior Melissa Robinson, a forward also returns for her fourth season on the team.

The core of returning veterans is impressive for MU, but key to their success will be the addition of the rookies. And Coach Finney is excited about this group - beginning with forward Katie Jarvis, a 5-11 starter off Robinson's (Burke, VA) 30-2 state championship runner-up team. Jarvis averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds her senior year in high school and was a two-time all-district player. The Saints also welcome Gen Schmitt -- a hot-shooting guard  with great range who was a two-time Virginia Independent Schools All-Stater. Schmitt, who is 5-9, played at Bishop Ireton (Arlington, Va.) where she scored over 1000 points for her career. Freshman Julie Baronas, a 6-0 forward from Mount de Sales (Ellicott City, MD) has looked sharp in preseason and should help shore up the post position for the Saints.

The Saints also bring another local player onto the team in Mary Davis, a 5-8 guard from Bishop O'Connell (Sterling, VA). Davis was captain her senior year with the Knights. Guard Angie Ferri, a 5-8 guard from Linganore HS (New Market, MD) should also make contributions to the team. Ferri's team was 17-4 last season and a state finalist.

Medgar Evers
Medgar Evers opens its 2000-2001 season with a lot of optimism. Head Coach Roy Anderson will look to his experienced players to start the season on a positive note.

"We have some players who have played college basketball and for us to be successful this season, these players will have to assert themselves on the court," Anderson said.

Senior guard Aisha Bingham will be one of the players Anderson will look to for on the court leadership. "Aisha has to play within the framework of our offense. On the defensive end, she can be a spark for us," Anderson said.

Other key returning players from last season includes sophomore forward Sherell Forrest, sophomore guard Martha Gonzalez and junior guard/forward Tamika Burroughs. All three players will be expected to make significant contributions this season. Two players return to the lineup after missing the 1999-2000 season. Junior guard Crystal Noel averaged 13 points per game during the 1998-1999 season and Wonita Persaud, a junior forward, who averaged 8.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per game two seasons ago, will be welcome additions to this year's squad.

A key recruit for the Lady Cougars is sophomore guard Giselle Lake. Lake transferred to Medgar Evers College from Kingsborough Community College, where she was a prolific scorer during the 1998-1999 season.

This year, Anderson has a core of freshmen he can call on to help his team. Rebecca Barksdale, Marsha Clarke, Nafessa Greatheart and Nikishe Neckles will all be given the opportunity to contribute this season.

"As the season goes on the freshmen will have to step up their game. This year, because we have several experienced players we will not have to put too much pressure on the first year players early in the season," said Anderson.

Tamika Brown, Victoria Walker and Melissa Thomas are three other freshmen that round out the Medgar Evers College team, which will be looking to improve on last year's 7-19 record.

Medgar Evers College opens its season at the Cougar Classic Tip Off Tournament at Kean, on Nov. 18.
